To move an note from layer 2 to 1 simply click it and select in the right-click menu "move to layer..."

Can only be applied to whole measures, unfortunately.

The only thing I would mention is that this gives you a lot of work, and saves the chorus a little money. If they were to download one of the free (or low-cost) MIDI players, you would only have to do the full MIDI file, and they could separate and mix themselves.

Point well taken Mike.

The free Music Reader from Finale scrolls the "words" and is helpful to practice correct time or cadence. Not sure how I'd do that with a MIDI player.

Please suggest a good MIDI player that would be easy for the singer to fade down certain instruments.

But if they use a MIDI player, then the actual sound that they get would depend on what samples were installed on their system - the default Windows midi player is too ghastly to cotemplate. Is that dropbox account password protected ? Because if it is accessible to the public then there could be copyright problems.

For my choir's practice recordings I make four files per piece, one per part with the part on one side and the rest of the voices and piano on the other; I also use a sax sound for the part I want and choir aahs for the others to make the part stand out. If you have a descant, then there would be a fifth file, of course.

Fritz;

I make one file with all parts turned down to 40% except Soprano and Alto which are panned to 1 and 127. The singers of these two parts can set their "balance" controllers on their computer to hear their part clearly and still adjust the complement of sounds to a level they are comfortable with. I make a second file with Tenor and Bass the same way. 40% seems to be low enough to allow them to pick out their parts and this reduces the number of files I must make.

If my Director decides to "Change" something in the arrangement, I must re-create all the files to include that change.

The MIDI concept is quite attractive since I could make only one file for everyone.

Also, if Finale is listening, it would be even MORE attractive if the free Finale Reader would allow to adjust the level of each part during playback.

The free Reader doesn't, but the $10 notepad does, on both Mac and Windows.

You could also look at VanBaskos MIDI player, and SweetMIDIPlayer. Do a google search.
