I probably am missing the use of Finalescript. But can't it be used as a shorthand away from the Finale program and then when you get back to the Finale program a script can be run and notes and lyrics, and other markings can be added using Finale script. If this can be done does anybody have an example of a simple music piece (twinkle?) and how it would look in Finalescript. Thanks. Bob Z.

To be honest Bob, Finalescript is a dead technology and I often wonder why Makemusic even includes it at all. It never really worked right from the beginning, lacked full documentation and has even been abandoned by its creator, Robert P.

I had high hopes for Finalescript, and previously I had private messaged Robert P on these message boards regarding its development but his continued ignoring of my messages and a lack of response to them indicated to me that even he has abandoned it and was too humiliated to admit it directly.

When I see other programs such as Harmony Assistant from Myriad Software and see how well they implemented their scripting language into their software it only makes me shrug and wonder how great finalescript could have been.

In actuality it is long overdue and finale should either have developed its scripting language or at the very least created something similar to Photoshop's Actions which are like built in Macros.

Good luck trying it out, but with regret I must suggest you abandon any hope of using finalescript in a productive way.

Bob Z,

Finalescript is extremely useful for me, apparently Ionian has had a different experience. It's always worked correctly for me, although the documentation is a little cryptic. But Bob, I'm not sure exactly what you want it to do. It doesn't add notes and lyrics.

I believe that the most common use for it is the powerful search and replace feature. With that feature you can change text itself, font, size, style, capitalization, etc.... on huge numbers of files with just one click. Say for instance, you have a full orchestral piece with all parts extracted and want to change a tempo marking from q = 120 to q = 108. Or you found that in putting rehearsal numbers in, you mis-typed a number. Those are perfect examples of what text search and replace will do.

You can use it also to copy document settings from one file to many files. Let's say you've edited some settings in Document Options>Notes and Rests. You could manually make those edits in one file, then use Finalescript to apply those same changes to 1000 other files if you want.

Bottom line for me, Finalescript is best used for making the same change to a lot of documents at one time, or if you have a change that you use on a regular basis, it would make sense to create a script that does what you want and keep it handy.

Hope this helps,
JT

Almost forgot, I use Finalescript several times everyday doing batch printing. I just choose the batch print script, point to the folder of music that I want printed, and click start. I go get a cup of coffee, come back and it's done. Huge time-saver.

Bob Z,

Please let me echo Jetcopy's sentiments. I became a devotee of FS when I had to do a batch conversion of a large collection of tunes under a tight deadline to get documents uploaded to the printer. What would have taken numerous hours manually was accomplished with a few lines of FS!

I have long felt that FS is one of Finale's great time & effort savers, right up there with TG Tools. As Jetcopy notes, the documentation is a bit sparse, but I experimented on some useless docs and got the hang of it OK. lol

FS is another masterpiece from Robert Piechaud, creator of Human Playback--among other excellent Finale add-ons.smile

I believe that part of TG Tools will allow a sort of entry from a database (Auricle??), but I have never tried that. You should also acquire TG Tools if you do a lot of Finale work.

Try FS, you'll like it

How do I learn more about FS?  Are you talking about the upgraded full version of TG tools.

No, Finalescript is not part of TG Tools...it's a separate plugin under "miscellaneous" in the plugins menu or directly from a score by ctrl-alt-q.
For serious use, both TG Tools full and FS are requirements, as well as Patterson Beams (included), IMHO.

Indeed. Myriad did a great job on their scripting environment. With only two programmers I might add. Too bad their forums have become predominately french speaking over the past few years. Seems very little interest in their product from english speakers. Partly because of the vibe their. In any case, that product is a little hoaky but it does have some really cool features and particularly they did an outstanding job on their scripting language, based on Lua. I wish Finale had something like that. Man do I.
