If you know what I mean.

As an example, I have a four lines of music, then some explanatory notes (which may expand), then a single isolated bar showing a variation, followed by more text. I think I want InDesign's capabilities in a music program!

Any ideas?

Either create a separate stave for the whole piece, which is hidden, except where you want it; or create it as an EPS or PDF and import it into Finale.

I thought the ossia tool would do the job, though it seems awful long-winded - create music, which then goes into the ossia measure, then hide the original? Why not just create the ossia measure? Maybe I'm missing something.

BTW, thanks for your responses people. Bill's thread was interesting.

I agree that the ossia approach seems long-winded, and as I wrote at the end of the thread, I surprised myself when it turned out to suit me best for the job I did.

If you want to just create the ossia in one step, then the simplest method will be to use Wiggy's approach of an invisible staff which is only made visible when needed. The down side to this approach is spacing, because the invisible staff will take on the note spacing of the visible staves, and you might want the spacing in the floating bar tighter. If that's not an issue for you, then this is definitely the quickest method.

For my present purposes, the ossia tool is the method I've decided to use. It's fussy but - in the end result - neat.

I think that the ability to create an ossia measure as a standalone unit - a bar or run of measures that could be edited in its own right without the need for anything hidden - would be a vast improvement.

You can get the “InDesign capability” with a workaround:

- Create a separate staff for the whole piece.

- At the place of the ossia, lock one measure into its own system.

- In this system, hide all staves except the separate staff (= the ossia staff).

- In all other systems, hide the separate staff.

- In the Page Layout menu, de-select “Avoid Margin Collisions”.
This steps allows for negative system margin values.

- Now you can position the (one-measure) ossia system anywhere.
You can also adjust the ossia system’s margins as you like, e. g. make the system narrower.

In comparison to the method of inserting the ossia as EPS or PDF, this “InDesign capability trick” has the advantage that you can edit the ossia (e. g. correct wrong notes) directly in Finale.

You can check Allow System Collision and place any close to each other.
