I think I want InDesign's capabilities in a music program!… You can get the “InDesign capability” with a workaround:
- Create a separate staff for the whole piece.
- At the place of the ossia, lock one measure into its own system.
- In this system, hide all staves except the separate staff (= the ossia staff).
- In all other systems, hide the separate staff.
- In the Page Layout menu, de-select “Avoid Margin Collisions”. This steps allows for negative system margin values.
- Now you can position the (one-measure) ossia system anywhere. You can also adjust the ossia system’s margins as you like, e. g. make the system narrower.

In comparison to the method of inserting the ossia as EPS or PDF, this “InDesign capability trick” has the advantage that you can edit the ossia (e. g. correct wrong notes) directly in Finale.
