I'm trying to get a glissando for cello and bass to play back properly. I can notate the glissandi just fine. Playback is the problem. It's from fourth-line F sharp to fourth-line F natural, only a half-step, but Finale plays back the slide immediately, not as a string player would execute it. I want the F sharp to be held almost to its full value before sliding the finger to F natural. How do I make Finale play back this glissando more realistically?

Art,
Could you user hidden notes and change the duration to double dot on the first, and a 32nd note on the second?

Thanks, Mike. I'll give that a try.

Didn't work, Mike, but thanks for trying. Made it sound odder. Anyone have a suggestion on how to make this play back properly?

I ran into an issue with playback of a harp gliss and I don't know if it applies to you but there's a checkbox to "delay as long as possible" or something like that. Maybe play around with checking and unchecking that box.

one issue with glissandi and playback is that unless you are actually using a library that contains an actual sampled gliss. then MIDI has to fake its way around it.
it does this by using "bend" data to bring the note up to the target pitch.

where there are issues is that bend has to be reset, and if you send data that adds an articulation to the next pitch, you're asking the program to handle both a bend reset and an articulation change at the same time. I guess there are limits to how much MIDI information can be handled on a single channel simultaneously.

this comment has to do with actual "slide" glissandi, and not diatonic glissandi as on the harp or piano.

Finale (started with ver. 3.0) using 2012 (2014 has been shelved for its lack of support for older Garritan libraries), putting Finale 25 through its paces.
Windows 8.1
basically ALL Garritan libraries, plus XSample Chamber Ensemble.

I think that in this case, it is the 8th note value that's the cause. Whole, half and quarter seem to sound correctly.

the issue is that there is a slur from the start of the gliss, to its target pitch. that means overlap of the notes.
add to this the glissando, and that means that ON the 2nd eighth note Finale is retuning the bent note, AND playing the next note. it can't both play the target note and correct the bend at the same time, since there is overlap.

as a test, just try removing the slur. that MIGHT make a difference in playback (again, one of the reasons I always make two scores: one for playback, one for printing).

Thanks, guys. I appreciate your comments. I think the problem was that I had indicated a glissando expression, the glissando smart line, and the plugin. When I turned the plugin off, the sound was much more to my liking. I'm note sure if it's supposed to work that way, but it's an improvement.

Where do you see this option? I can't find it.
