Am I right that when I define my own instrument library using bank select commands to access the different banks on my JV-1010, the only way to define an instrument with a unique bank select/program change setting is to give that instrument its own channel number? That means, of course , that no more than 64 unique instruments can be defined in a single library. Not that I would use them all at once, but I was hoping I could have them all defined so I could select different instruments from within Finale. The Finale PDF help file talks about instrument libraries pre-defined for some sound modules, but when I found and loaded in the libraries that came with Finale, they all had only a few instruments in them. Too bad Finale doesn't (apparently) have a sophisticated instrument manager like, say, Overture. I'd be glad if anyone can correct me on this.

As long as the Instrument Names are different, Finale will let you set them even to the same MIDI channel (in the Instrument List). Furthermore, to avoid MIDI channel conflicts, you can force a staff to use a specific MIDI channel which will override any Patches assigned to it but NOT those initially in the Instrument List. What you must do is use a Staff/Note Expression and define a CHANNEL type event for each staff, placed at the beginning of the score. Then you can apply defined Patch type events and they will be applied IGNORING their original MIDI channel assignments.

In otherwords to take full advantange of such a method, your "instrumental library" must be created as Staff/Note Expressions in the Text Expression Designer window from which they then can be saved as a "Text Expressions" library.
