I have a piece that plays back perfectly in Finale, but not even close in SmartMusic. The problem is probably the mixed meters. Tempo is quarter = 200 and the music is running 8th notes going through 6/8, 7/8, 5/8, 12/8 etc and the 8th notes are not at all the same speed. The 6/8 is set up with 2 beats/measure (to make beaming correct) but SmartMusic playback seems to make that dotted quarter = 200. I've tried changing the 6/8 to six beats and resetting the tempo to eighth=400 but it make no difference.

How can I get SmartMusic (2010) to playback just like Finale (2010) does?

Herrickd,

I'm pretty sure you'd need to set expressions (hidden ones work) in each of those measures to define the specific 8th note tempo for each change, as SmartMusic views the main beat for its tempo. You can send the file in to the support staff at smartmusic.custhelp.com/app/ask and they can check it over with the Finale folks, but I'd encourage you to try inserting tempo indicators but leaving the time signatures correct (dotted-quarter pulse, etc.).

Thanks,

James H. Lund

Set expressions in each of those measures??? If I've got a piece several hundred measures long changing between 6/8, 5/8, 7/8, etc I need an expression on EACH measure?

That's too cumbersome to even think about. I just thought if it played right in Finale (and it does) that it would play right in SmartMusic.....

Your original description sounds like you're saying the tempo changes at each of those places in Finale - as if you already have something manually set for each of those places. I think that's what James is going off of. I recommend submitting your file so he can get a clear picture of what's going on and determine for certain whether any per-measure editing is necessary.
