is there a way to alter those basic default colors or are they "hard coded" so they can't be changed?
i'd like to print using only the color cartridge in a printer so i don't want any all black colors selected.

Anyway, I am no king. I would be more of a cupbearer. The first shall be last and the last shall be first. Now Peter Thomsen, he's a real king.
And, to stay on topic, even though Finale cannot customize every element, what would be even better, for my money, would be a highlighting tool by which you could mark certain spots in the score for various purposes.
As far as double posting, since there are users who don't visit the "side" of the forum that doesn't match their OS, and since the OP uses both OS's, I see no harm in having the question on both sides. That shows tenacity in wanting to find the answer. I say "don't leave any stone unturned" and often find what I need by being the "squeaky wheel". When I had the issue of the non-sticking folder option, I persisted until I got a response from MM that it was a programming error, to be tended to in the future. And I thought I was going cuckoo.

This is a very basic feature that, to my way of thinking, should have been a part of Finale a long time ago. makemusic customer service confirmed that it was not and agreed to pass the suggestion along for consideration for a future update/upgrade. The necessity for a 3rd party program to do something that Finale should do is a negative. Educators who teach young children could benefit from it as well as old men who want to use less black ink.
Let's just be clear here: you are MORE than likely the ONLY MakeMusic client who will get any advantage from this "functionality".
Music is meant to be printed in black and white.
And there are countless educators who will counter your statement that this would be useful for teaching children. I started at age 5 or so, and my teachers never used coloured sheet music to teach me. Have children become stupider since my childhood, that they now require colour-coded notes to understand music?
So there's actually nothing all that "basic" about what you are requesting. If it were so basic, it WOULD have been part of Finale's design a long time ago.
Finale is for engraving music. It isn't a colouring book creator. Michel R. Edward Composer, teacher
