The Forward Slash character in Instrument Names still breaks PDF saved file names (at least on Mac).

This happens on Windows too, probably because slashes in either direction are not allowed in filenames. This is also an issue when extracting parts (though I rarely do so anymore). The extraction process comes to a halt as soon as an illegal character is encountered (no further parts are extracted). It would be much better if Finale changed slashes to an underscore in any situation that involved creating and naming files, and it should be smart enough to leave them alone on Macs.

With CutePDF, in Windows, it does change the / to an underscore. CutePDF can only do one part at a time, as there is a batch processing glitch (at least for me). But the / in the part name is a non-issue, from the result I get.

If you wish to have a slash in the part name as for an instrument double, and you need to create part files either as PDFs or extracted parts, the workaround (at least on Mac) is to substitute the slash character / with the similar ⁄ character. Here they are side by side : /⁄ (regular forward slash appears first).

On Mac, this alternate slash character is created by typing OPTION-SHIFT-1 and you can batch create PDF files that include it with no problem. e.g. the first PDF part file won't continually overwrite itself, or come to a halt when it encounters an "illegal" character. There is a small difference in this character's appearance, but it's a solid workaround in the absence of a fix from MakeMusic.

In light of this information, maybe the problem is with Acrobat Distiller, not Finale.

There's no good reason why the file name need match the part name exactly, so it seems like Finale just needs to make the underscore or similar substitution in the case where one is saving parts en masse. This is got to be easy.

AFAIK Apple OSX uses its own version of a PDF distiller in the print dialog. Note that it is possible on Mac to Extract parts with regular slashes in the file names in Finale 2012 (I have not tried this in Finale 2014 but I would guess behavior has not changed).

test - Oboe / English Horn.mus
test - Clarinet / Bass Clarinet.mus

Behavior is different when printing to a regular printer; Finale does not attempt to rename the files - in a score called "test.mus" all of the individual parts are labeled as "test.mus" - they are all queued as separate files.

It's possible that the slash character is disallowed by the OS itself when using the PDF creation feature of the print dialog. But it is my contention that Finale should not be sending the slash character in the first place. It gets away with this on its own extracted files because the OSX Finder is allowing it, but it breaks in the PDF creation process because the OS PDF distiller is not.

When using the PDF function of the built in Mac OS print dialog, however, for any part names with a slash in them are overwritten again and again, while part names that do not have a slash show the score name followed by the part name.

I recently learned something I thought I would share about this issue of forward slashes in part names when saving to PDF files. MakeMusic's Marketing Manager, Scott Yoho emailed me today:

"The good news I can share is that we believe this issue will be resolved in 2014.5"

Until then, as stated earlier, at least on Mac, you can create an alternate slash character by typing OPTION-SHIFT-1 and PDF files for parts can be saved to your desktop with no issues. (I would guess there is a Windows equivalent to this alternate slash character?)

Is the slash the directory separator on OS/X? If so and you ever use the shell, this seems like buying trouble for not much gain, though I guess the same thing could be said for spaces. Most people don't use the shell, though, I suppose.

The forward slash is perfectly legal for a filename in OS X. Apple's HFS+ file system has only one forbidden character, which is the colon. This was the folder separator back in Classic Mac OS. OS X "translates" the Unix use of slash to colon in the dark underbelly of the file system. A Unix filename can also include a slash by escaping with a back slash: "This\/is\/one\/filename.mus". Spaces are perhaps more troublesome in Unix, as a space in a filename can be misread as the end of the name. However, any shell script written in the last 20 years should really be designed to expect spaces in filenames, if used.

However, it can be argued that it is generally unwise to use / and some of the other symbol characters, particularly if your files will ever travel across a Window file system.

This will cause trouble if you're typing the file name into the shell, so you'd have to resort to quote marks or a backslash. Which are of course possible, but cumbersome. I was just questioning whether it's worth the added trouble, since the file name is in some sense arbitrary.

No trouble. The Unix shell uses slash and does not understand colon as a separator. The colon is forbidden as a filename character.

Thus, if you have a file called "Flute/Clarinet.musx" in a directory called /Bernstein/ you need to escape the third slash in

/Bernstein/Flute/Clarinet.musx

Just looking at that path should illustrate my misgivings. Possible to deal with by escaping it, but is it worth the trouble and confusion?
