Hi,

I would like to create my own SmartMusic accompaniment files. I know this is possible in Finale 2004 and newer. The problem is, I have no need whatsoever for Finale except to save files as SmartMusic accompaniments. Finale is a very expensive program for just this function. Is there anything else that will allow this to happen?

Would Coda consider making it less expensive for us rabid Smart Music users to save files less expensively?

Thanks

Hi Michael,

Actually, Allegro and PrintMusic can already save SmartMusic accompaniment files. However, the feature was greatly improved in Finale going into Finale 2005, and so Allegro 2005 is the only child product that has inherited the advancements. As far as cost goes, the cheapest I've seen Allegro on educational discount has been around $120, and the cheapest I've seen Finale is just under $200. If the company releases a new PrintMusic this year, it may have improved support for creating SM accompaniments.

Tyler,

Thanks for the info. What kind of improvments are we talking about? 2004 didn't do much more than save the file in SMA format.

Thanks

The support for displaying the notation in SmartMusic was as I understand it greatly improved. The feature exists in 2004, but since the feature to display notation in SmartMusic wasn't developed until long after Finale 2004 came out (it actually came after Finale 2005), there were a number of things they had to change when creating Finale 2005 in order for the notation to display correctly.

Also, Finale 2005 introduced the ability to save SM files for assessment. This is the feature we see in Methods and Exercises where the program shows which notes are played correctly and incorrectly. It may not have much application at the university level, except in showing students how they might use the program in their future teaching endeavors (or in their private lesson teaching).

There is now a good interface for adding SmartMusic markers for normal accompaniments. The interface looks pretty much like the SmartMusic customize dialog box and greatly simplifies the process.

If this is too fuzzy, MakeMusic should be able to give you a better description of the differences. You might send them an e-mail.

Tyler,

Not fuzzy at all. Thank you for your clear explanation. The rehearsal markers feature would be worth its weight in gold.. big time saver.

The other items i dont' really need.. but the markers feature I do. I'll look into a copy of Allegro 2005.

Thanks again for this valuable info.

I have PrintMusic2004, $69 if I remember correctly, figured it would be easier to learn, and it  has  a  Save As SmartMusic Accompaniment  feature I've never tried.  (Editing to say oops,  I told you wrong, it's grayed out.)

The program is  very  satisfactory,  arranging a Beethoven symphony down to string quartet/synth,  except   I  had  a  computer  crash  and  don't know how to scan printed-out pages back in.

Now  will  one  of  you  please  tell  me  how  to  scan  in  some  pages  with  this?  You  click  for  information  and  there's  just  this  "Upgrade".   I want to try the one that's here and now.

Do  you  turn on  PrintMusic,  minimize the screen, and  then open your  (HP) scanner and save  as  a  Tiff  file?   I  don't  have  a  clue  how  to  then  get  that  into  PrintMusic, don't  think  there's  any  "Send To".

Thanks in advance.
