This isn't a Finale question so much as a
general engraving/music theory question.
A whole rest is used when an entire
measure is blank in time signatures of
4/4 and below (not, for instance a dotted
half rest in 3/4). Is there a rule about time
signatures with more than four quarter
notes? Would you use a whole rest in 5/4
or 6/4? If you had to show four beats of
rest in 5/4, would you use two half-rests
to save a whole rest for the whole
measure? If not a whole rest for a whole
measure in 5/4, would you use a whole
and a quarter, or maybe a dotted-half and
half (I'm thinking "Take Five")?
I've spent most of my performing days
playing songs in 4/4 that I learned by ear,
so I would appreciate any opinions from
those of you with a classical/progressive
backgrounds. Thanks.

Hi Michael,
Do a search on 5/4 and you'll find a pretty similar question in the Windows forum dated 27th May
The title is Whole note in 5/4

While the whole rest equals the value of a whole note, it commonly serves as the symbol for ANY completely silent measure, regardless of the meter or time signature.
(The whole rest is also the only rest which is centered in the measure.)

Peter,
Thanks for the tip about the Windows
forum. I should probably have a look over
there from time to time, but I'm afraid. To
paraphrase a very wise sock-puppet I
once heard… "AAAYEAS, seductive is the
dark side, journey there not, or forever will
it haunt your destiny, UUUMMM?"

LOL!
I don't know what that sock puppet was on but I'll bet it was illegal! Now where did I plant those magic mushrooms?
If you value your sanity, the Windows forum is not a good place to be at the moment. Makes the Mac forum's OS X flames look like a Siberian dawn.
It's nice to pop into your arena for a chill out...

Just out of curiosity, what does anyone
think about the dotted whole rest? It
makes sense that if you only use the
whole rest for entire measures
(regardless of time signature) there
shouldn't be a dotted whole rest.

A dotted whole rest might make sense in large measures, like 6/2:
dotted whole note + dotted whole rest.
