I recently purchased SmartMusic for my son (alto sax). He will be using is on a Windows PC that currently does NOT have speakers or a microphone. Judging from teh volume out of the computer itself, i will need to get speakers ASAP, but what type of microphone should I get? Is the $20 from SM the best/best value around? Do I want something that plugs into a mic jack or is USB better?

Any info/advice appreciated.

RSMBob,

I'm sure other folks will weigh in, but you'll find that the SmartMusic mic works really well - it's designed to, from the ground up. We found that most mics you can buy at local stores are built for human speech, and don't assess very well. Built-in microphones (on laptops that have them) work very poorly, as well. Using a SmartMusic mic also helps if you run into a microphone, assessment or recording issues as our support team can help (they aren't able to support other microphones, so that's another plus for the SmartMusic mic).

Thanks,

James Lund

I have various microphones kicking around but when I subscribed to SmartMusic I bought their microphone just because I presumed they had taken the steps to ensure it worked properly with the program and as James says they support it. It is very light, has a clip and a good length of wire to reach the computer. No sense fooling around for $20.

There are enough issues and anguish built into learning to play so no need to take a chance on adding another one.smile

Personally, I have had success with microphones that are built into the laptop. I would expect that this depends on the type of Laptop you have though. I have a Toshiba. As for other options, I did buy a Smart Music microphone when I first signed up for Smart Music several years ago. At that time, I remember being disappointed with some of the physical attributes of the device. Essentially, mine fell apart within a month or so. I feel a little bit bad sending people elsewhere, but there are other companies that produce a pretty good instrument microphone. Kjos is really good. Plus, their mics are 1/2 the price.

Good luck.
