I have a brass quintet score which I prefer to display in C. Of course the parts appear in proper transposition. The problem is the horn clef: I want it to appear in bass clef on the score, yet treble cleff on the part. Otherwise there are too many ledger lines either on the score or the part. Is there a way to make the score clef independent from the part clef? Any advice appreciated...

This can certainly be done. What application and version are you using?

While in the Score, go up to the menu Document > Display in Concert Pitch. That should do the trick.

I'm afraid it didn't do the trick. Score appears in concert pitch alright, but when I change the clef in the score, it also changes the clef in the part, and vice versa.

I'm not sure it would. I would define a staff style that checks "Set to clef" in the transposition, and apply that to the entire part but not the score.

See attached.

You shouldn't even need the staff style. You can "set to clef" in the transposition options of the horn staff, so the score will be in whatever clef you like, even multiple changing clefs, and it will all be set to treble in F when transposed.

I tried, but that didn't work either. But I've never defined a staff style before, so I might have done it wrong! Could you please check and see if I've skipped a step:
While viewing the horn part, I selected the staff tool
and selected all measures by cntrl+A
clicked "define staff styles" on the menu
I clicked "new", gave it a name
checked the "transposition" box,
clicked "select"
hit "set to clef"
selected treble clef
clicked OK

nothing changed...
If I try changing the clef in the part now, it still automatically effects the score clef.

See my attachment above (which works). You need to pick Other when you select the transposition, then you can use Set to Clef.

Christopher, can you elaborate? When I use Set to Clef in the staff options, it seems to affect both score and part.

I finally managed it with Motet's method! Thank you so much Motet:)
Apparently, defining a new staff style while a staff is selected does not ensure that the newly defined staff will pick-up that style. One has to right-click the staff and select the newly defined staff style after completing the steps I wrote above.
Thanks again:)

When you go to Concert View, it shows in Bass. In Transposed View, it shows in Treble.

I think I get it--"Set to Clef" and the rest of the transposition options are ignored when displaying in concert pitch, but heeded otherwise. So, Set to Clef: Treble and change clefs in the concert pitch score at will.
