Can SmartMusic be made to work with a xylophone?  I've tried, but SM seems confused by the pitches.

Xylophone definitely is harder for the pitch recognition in SmartMusic to work with. Which mode are you using - loading accompaniments for intelligent accompaniment? Is the program continually rushing, or does it not seem to be responding at all? Have you played around with setting the intelligent accompaniment slider to higher/lower values?

Windows XP, all updates
