I have a piece for handbells with measure numbers on the top of each measure. I'd like to move the first beat of every measure to the right a bit, away from the barline, so the notes don't collide with the measure numbers. Is there a way to do this globally? What is the easiest way? Thanks!

Sylvia:

There are several ways to do what you want to do, but I can give you two that won't mess up your music spacing.

One is to go to Options> Document Settings> Music Options and in the Spacing section, make the spacing before the music greater.

More logically, though, why don't you just move your measure numbers? Select the Measure Tool and go to Measure> Measure Numbers> Edit Regions. In the dialog box that pops up, make sure that your measure numbering region is selected, and then, under Positioning & Display, click the Position button. You can drag the little zero around, or use the H and V boxes to type in exact values. When you have positioned the number to your liking, hold down Ctrl and click OK. If you don't like what you see, hit Ctrl-z and try again.

You can also move individual measure numbers by selecting their handles, or, in the Measure menu, selecting Dragging Selects Number Handles and dragging a region. Measure numbers snap to guides, so it's easy to align them.

Look at the attached file for examples of all this stuff.

Cheers.

In case you do need to make space for something that you can't move easily (like a rolled chord) use TGTools to make extra space at the beginning of a measure. Go to TGTools>Spacing>Add/Remove space in measure. You can set up a hot key (also done in TGTools) to automatically add a fixed amount of EVPUs to the beginning of a selected measure.
