Hi; I'm new to this forum, so please be merciful!

I'm running Finale 2007 on my Intel-based Mac (Leopard 10.5.1.) I've never had a bit of trouble until yesterday. A friend sent me a Finale file without an extension on the file name; when I tried to open it, the program crashed. So I renamed it as a *.mus file. Still crashed. So I tried to open Finale to work on another file, and it crashed again. Now it crashes anytime I try to open it, through the Finder or my Taskbar. It gets as far as "Initializing Floating Windows" on the startup screen, freezes, and quits.

I do NOT know a lot about computers, but I used Cocktail to clear the caches, repair permissions, etc., and then restarted several times -- to no avail.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I've encountered this a few times, too. The occurrences seem random, but the solution (at least for me) is to replace the Finale 2008 Preferences file. I keep a copy in the Finale 2008 folder, and another on the desktop. When this hanging crash occurs, I replace the corrupted file in the Finale folder with a copy of the one on the desktop.

First you need to have an uncorrupted copy of the preferences file to use as a source. If you don't keep the preferences file in your Finale folder, you can find it in your User/Library/Preferences folder. To fix the problem now, you should go to that folder and trash the Finale 2008 Preference file. When you next restart Finale, it will create a new, clean preferences file. You can then copy that, paste it in your Finale folder, and paste a copy on your desktop, or wherever you wish to store it for easy access.

(Preference file in the Finale folder supercedes the one in the User/Library/Preferences folder.)

This cures the symptom (corrupted preferences file), but I don't know how to actually fix the problem, because I haven't been able to figure out what actually causes it.

Thank you, Tom! That worked like a charm. I am so grateful!

Another strange thing is happening now -- the program won't quit properly. I choose "quit" and it halts for a moment, then pulls up the same "The Application Finale 2007 Quit Unexpectedly" message. It doesn't seem to be hurting anything, so it doesn't bother me, but it's strange that it's working that way.

Thanks again! What a relief.

People have reported this problem with 2008. Curious that you're experiencing it with 2007. That might suggest it's an issue that needs resolving with an Apple update, rather than a Finale one.

Leopard and Finale are not good friends, at least on my machine. When it is open Finale works as expected. When I try and quit a file Finale freezes and I need to force quit it. It will not open normally after this unless I log out and log back in or restart.

Seems like this is a common ailment. Hopefully it will be fixed in the next update. (It was supposed to be fixed in the Finale 2008a update. No such luck.)

Finale works without any errors on my Power PC with Tiger installed.

Trash your preferences (as suggested, keep a spare clean set); repair permissions; use a cache cleaning utility. Each of these has individually been reported to help matters.
For me, repairing permissions worked, and I have not had any Finale crashes since.

Also, uninstall any MIDI hardware you may have that does not yet have Leopard drivers. (Or make sure you have the up-to-date drivers.)

10.5.2 update is supposed to be due at the end of February. Perhaps that will improve matters.

I have had Leopard (10.5.2, now) for a few months. Finale 07 worked okay (lost the playback ability?), but it crashed on exit the last time I used it, and now it is crashing every time I try to open it.

I tried deleting the library/preferences file and repairing permissions. When I restarted Finale, it crashed again, and the preferences file was not recreated. I am wary of cache cleaning utilities (some controversy on the mac forums), but willing to try one if anyone has a solid recommendation.

Or any other advice. (Or do I need to just upgrade to Finale 08?)

I just wanted to say THANK you for your post! I was about to have a heart attack when Finale began crashing as I am finishing up an oratorio! Deleting prefs and restarting took care of it. (PS I am working on Finale 2004 on a Mac 10.5.7. Yep, mixing dinosaurs and leopards!)
