Plugins are small, add-on software programs (utilities, tools) that do specific tasks. Finale comes with several plugins (at least as far back as F97, I think) and more can obtained from a variety of 3rd party sources.

I believe that the term "plug in" initially caught our attention back around 1996 or so, when Netscape Navigator was still the browser of choice. There were all kinds of companies, like Shockwave (Flash) and Adobe (Acrobat reader), that had "plug ins" to Netscape that one could download and install, to allow the browser to read certain file types. One could go to the Netscape site and download and install dozens of plug ins. (I guess one can still do this today)

MakeMusic was smart to engage smart people to write Plug-ins for Finale.
