When I click on the handle of a smart shape, the pop up menu says 'edit' (among others). Why is that menu item there? It doesn't do anything, so why clutter up a pop up menu with items that have no function whatsoever?

It is indeed totally redundant, but just wait and see what happens if they remove it!

Try this:

Make sure you are in the Selection Tool. Control-Click (Right-Click) on a Smart Shape and pick Edit from the menu. Two things happen - the shape is opened for editing and you are taken to the Smart Shape Tool. Viewed from that particular workflow, it seems to serve a purpose, eh?

It may have some use in automated workflows.

So does double clicking on the smart shape when in the selection tool, which I believe to still be much faster than control-click or right-click and choosing a menu item.

I would think this would be extremely low on the list of Finale complaints.
