Hello there would be very grateful if I could be assisted in the process of writing Big band drum parts
The drum part I'm trying to copy into finale 2012 ,(Windows 10 )has slash notation in the usual place (middle of the staff) small reduce cue sized notes (hits)on the g staff above the staff , also small cue sized notes (hits)on the D space below the staff

Not sure of the process for doing this
Be grateful for a point type response thanks again in anticipation

Someone I know who has used finale for many years told me before you enter the slashes you should enter half or quarter note rests in all measures ?????

Again thanks for assistance
Martin

Mainstream: I'm not a very good explainer, so anyone else, please jump in.
There are several (very convoluted) ways to do it. It just gets a little easier every time.

Take a look at this and see if it helps.

Are you interested solely in notation of the drum part, or do you want to have it play back as well?

Also, you might post a picture of the notation that you're trying to copy into Finale.

What version of Finale/Make Music do you have?

When reading the original post, you say cues on the g "staff". Do you mean the g "space"? These are 2 different things.

And yes, you can combine slash and cues. But first are we talking 2 staves or one?

Thank you for responding in very simple terms all I'm trying to do is write a big band drum part on one staff

Cue sized notation on top of the staff and similar cue sized notation under the staff
Thanks

This is a rough demo, but shows what can be done.

Edit the slash notation staff style as follows: Alternate Notation>Settings>Alternate Notation>Other Layers: Make sure "show notes" is checked and check other elements as you need.
Slash notation should be in layer 1, I put my hits in layer 3, in which I have set stems up and rests to float up 6.
Then I reduce the layer 3 notes to 75%.
As always, there are 75 ways to do anything in Finale, and someone will come up with another way.
I recommend you download and use Jari's plugins and TG Tools if you don't already have them. Makes the job easier.

JW Change is a must (a.o. for reducing notes in a specific layer like Jim suggested, but also for many more tasks) : www.finaletips.nu/index.php/download
