Don't know if anyone else has had this problem but the past few Finale releases have created me some concern when it comes to PDF'ing. For about three years now I've had a constant intermittent problem with the PDF results - until today, when I finally worked out what was causing the problem.

The Problem:

When PDF'ing, Finale, on occasions, screws up the result giving me pages where the information on each page is reduced to a Thumbnail size and placed in the top left hand corner. At the same time, a second, blank page is generated as a separate file. Both files, of course, are totally  useless. The only thing you can do is re-PDF and the result, 99% of the time, is fine. If it isn't, simply re-PDF again. I've never had to re-PDF more than 3 times in a row.

The problem was more frustrating when PDF'ing large documents (50-page scores, for example).

What was causing it? TA DAH!!! I realised to day that it's Finale's AUTO SAVE. If Finale completes an Auto Save while a PDF is being generated, BINGO! The problems mentioned result.

So, the fix - switch off auto save or reduce the amount of time between saves. I usually set my auto save to 2-minute intervals...having lost much info in years gone by sees me doing this. I just have to remember to switch the auto save back on when I've finished PDF'ing.

I think this problem (and its cause) has been mentioned here before.

Finale's auto-save has a track record of causing more problems than its usefulness might mitigate. As Finale is pretty stable, and I have spent the last thirty years conditioning myself to habitually save manually, I don't use it.

I've had very good success with a free program that's available online. Just Google "doPDF" and you'll find it.
Download it, install it, and it will then appear on your list of printers. If you print from Finale (or any other program
that prints) to doPDF, it will output a perfect PDF file every time. I think that my version of Finale doesn't permit saving
to a PDF, but doPDF gets around that problem very nicely.

The thumbnail issue also occurs with 3rd party pdf-drivers, so... nice to know what's causing it!! thanks,
