Would someone be able to show me how to insert the symbol that shows multiple measures with rests in them? I have attached an image to help define what I'm trying to do. I'm using Finale 2011 on Windows 7

Have you checked "multimeasure rest" in the user guide? All you need to do is select the measures you want, right click, then select "multimeaure rest."

There is one caveat on multimeasure rests.  They must be empty.  If the measure happens to have a real whole rest, it will not be included in the multimeasure rest.  Use the plug-in to change them to the default whole rest, or select the measure and press BACKSPACE to clear all entires in it.  This is a mistake that bites many folks before they learn.
