I prefer to copyright my music in PDF format, but Finale routinely fails to faithfully export the document: for instance, the three beams of 1/32 notes get fused, appearing as one thick black beam. Book italicized Antiqua Bold font (I use for fingering) is displaced and erroneously interpreted as Hebrew-Bold and replaced by system fonts that are not italicized, and lines drawn with the Bracket Tool are moved to overlap expressions, making for a sloppy looking presentation.

I can resize the pages and take screenshots, after which I can import the pages as graphic files into MS-Word, wherein I can save the document as a PDF file with the CutePDF plugin; but doing so is a labor and noticable clarify is lost in the conversion process. Is there another way to save your work in PDF format?

Right--go through the CutePDF virtual printer rather than using Finale's PDF output.

Just to clarify as few details, if you have CutePDF or some other "virtual" printer installed on you computer, then any program that prints, including Finale, should have a way to select which printer you want to use.  In my case, I don't have CutePDF, but PDFCreator, among others.  In the Finale print dialog box, press "Setup" to be able to choose your printer.  The document will be printed by the "virtual" printer.  Depending on the "virtual" printer settings/options, and/or the "Properties" button, you may or may not have to supply a destination path/filename for the resultant PDF document.  The attached images should make it clear.

In my experience, File>Export>PDF is all but useless, however, from the Graphics tool>Export Pages> type-PDF has generally given much better (although not always perfect) results. Does Finale actually produce the PDFs in different ways using those methods or am I crazy?

I use PDFCreator as well, but can't seem to figure out how to print a page size that is not pre-listed in the dropdown selection for sizes (for example 9-1/2 x 12-1/2, a common enough size for music but not among the default selections.) Not to hijack the thread, but can anyone offer how to print to custom sizes using one of those virtual printers?

With CutePDF, just choose Custom Page Size and set it for whatever you want.

PDFCreator offers a multitude of paper size options, but the ability to set your own custom size is not among them.  You have to choose one of the supplied sizes that is closest to what you want.  Finale has a size called Concert, 9"x12", but that is not a choice in PDFCreator.  The closest to your preferred size of 9 1/2" x 12 1/2" seems to be C4, approximately 9" x 12 3/4".  Be sure to check "1-up fit to page" in the Finale printer dialog.

BTW, you can choose paper size in the print setup dialog box without having to go to "Properties -> Advanced".  The dropdown list changes to support whatever print driver you have chosen.

There's a way to add new paper sizes to a given printer in Windows. I can never remember how to do it, but Google will tell you.

Excellent tip Motet! idea   I did not know you could do that.  I tried it and it worked for me on Win8.1 and PDFCreator.

Go to "Control Panel -> Devices and Printers", select the printer icon you want to add/delete/modify printer page sizes for, and select the "Print server properties" button along the top.  The "Print server properties" dialog box will open.  Select the "Forms" tab.  You can then add a new form, change the properties of an existing form, or delete an existing form.  To add a form, you have to change an existing form to have the dimensions you want, but be sure to check "Create a new form" and give it a new name and dimensions before pressing "Save Form" and then "OK".

You can also start the above procedure by pressing the "Change Form Settings" button along the bottom of the dialog box.

You can use Acrobat Pro CS2 to print it to a PDF file.
CS2 is free.

Finale 2009c now (works better than 2011c) on OS X 10.6.8 and not thinking to upgrade any more until both computers die completely (iMac 21', MacBook Pro 13').

Adobe Creative Suite 2 is free? Wow! That is still a powerful set of multimedia/graphic tools. What's the catch?

Simple CutePDF Writer works nicely. I also tried the slooooower but feature-rich PDF Creator. Yay!

The info about custom page size is handy. Thank you.

Always a hitch, isn't there?

Search for it and you can get it.
It's some kind of grey zone. Adobe released the download with the serial numbers for people that own a licence but couldn't activate anymore because they shutted down the licence server.
So legally it is for people with licence but Adobe doesn't care too much about it. Even in printed computer magazines it was reported as "free" software. So if you don't go commercial it would be ok I think. For commercial purposes better be true and get a licence.

It is 10 years old, though, ancient for software. Of course, I still use Finale 2005 on some old files.

IMHO it's not necessary shoot sparrows with the ordnance. Adobe is too big, universal and too expensive that's not very logical to use it for PDF creation only. There are many different free download PDF creators ant it works perfect. Lately I use PDFill PDF Tools or sometimes doPDF 7 and have any technological problems. Many years ago I use craked Adobe Acrobat Pro and time to time have some unexpected mistakes. Maybe, that it was cracked?
