I'm trying to create a script to copy note values (and lyrics assigned to them) from layer 1 to layer 4 & then replacing those notes in layer 4 with hidden rests.

I'm arranging the 4 parts of a vocal hymnal for various instruments.  The notes & associated lyrics are in the soprano line.  The alto, tenor & bass lines often do not have the same rhythm as the soprano line.  I need to retain the lyrics where they are in the soprano line in the parts with different rhythms.  I think the best way is to duplicate the soprano line in another layer with hidden rests & words assigned to them.  Unfortunately I have been unable to develop a script to do this.  Without automation it's an extremely cumbersome task.

Any ideas on a script OR an alternate method of accomplishing this?

I'm using Finale 2007 on a PC with a Media Center OS.

Why bother?
Move contents of layer 1 to layer 4.
Apply staff style "blank notation".

Lyrics will remain in layer 4 with no notes showing.

I think Michel is on the right track.
More precisely, this script works:

Move layer 1 to 4
Apply staff style "blank notation: layer 4"
