OK, so there are certain aspects of Finale's 'default' stem lengths that I do not like and seem to spend endless hours "tweaking".

I've attached two example - one before and the other after.

I gather there is no way to 'program' this into Finale right?

The image at left is after I've tweaked it (the one to the right is the default).

Umm...

Plug-ins > Note, Beam, and Rest Editing > Patterson Plug-Ins Lite > Patterson Beams

Modify the settings up the way you want them. Select All (CTRL+A), run the plugin.

Simple. (Hard part is figuring out what settings you want)

woodwind specialist and doubler - Finale 2014d using Speedy Entry - no capslock, GPO 4 Full, Garritan Jazz & Big Band 3, Garritan Concert and Marching Band 2, Windows 10, 12GB RAM, frequently RTFM.

If the composer says in effect to the performer: "I do not care whether you perform my music or not," we cannot argue the matter. But if he indicates: "I want you to perform and respond to this music," then his fundamental duty is to write his music so that it is accessible to interpretation. When the performer cannot approach the composer's meaning because of capriciously obscure notation, he may in effect say to the composer: "Why should I bother to puzzle out your music?" - Gardner Read

By the way your "Umm..." is quite a little uncalled for as the hidden message there is "how did you not know that?".

Never assume all users, no matter how long they have used the software have the same knowledge or experience.

I find Patterson beams useful and I generally like the default settings... for the most part. Do any of you have comments about the setting that you prefer for a "professional looking engraving"?

(The one problem that I see with Patterson beams is that once it a while I makes an angle and position of a beam between two notes where there is a flat or sharp on the second note in such a way that the top of the accidental is embedded in the beam. As long as I proofread for these it is easy enough to use the special tools to move the beam up a very slight bit so that there is a space between the top of the accidental and the beam).

Sorry, that wasn't my intention.

I agree that I still get the occasional accidental collision, so it's not completely fool-proof.

I use the following settings for beams and the Patterson plugin:

woodwind specialist and doubler - Finale 2014d using Speedy Entry - no capslock, GPO 4 Full, Garritan Jazz & Big Band 3, Garritan Concert and Marching Band 2, Windows 10, 12GB RAM, frequently RTFM.

In the instructions Robert Patterson provides with the full version of his plugins, he describes the settings in great detail, as well as providing settings which resemble Ted Ross beaming and Henle beaming. I tried to attach the document but unfortunately it's an rtfd file with imbedded graphics and the forum won't let me upload it. The same happened when I extracted his text and tried to upload it. I was able to upload some of RB's settings for different beaming styles (there are others, as well: Finale settings, beam separation, etc., but I haven't included these, as it would exceed the number of attachments allowed). In any case, it looks as though Ted Ross' settings are closer to what the OP wants, as Henle beams generally use a very mild slope.

Looks like I missed the the OP's second post... my settings are for a more Henle-type beaming.
