I’m using Windows 7, Finale 2012 (and CuBase 5) I do most of my writing work for show or blues bands (5+4+vox,) or big bands (5+4+4+4+vox) Here’s a sweet little script I developed to make it easy for me to channel my lead trumpet part into a workable drum chart. This basic drum part script saves me a ton of time on my projects.
New to scripting? - READ the script. Anything prefaced by “//” is instructional. The how and why of the script is here, plus some important additional instructions on how to customize it to work it’s best for YOU.. I create arranging templates for most of my clients, so 90% of my document options and libraries are already pre set and ready to go. If you are just starting out, or work on a wide range of projects, you will need to do a couple of important things to your doc(s) before this script will work for you.
1. Add a single concert pitch staff to the bottom of your project and call it “Utility”. I have a utility staff on all my templates. It’s a great place to stick stuff if you are cutting, pasting, moving stuff around. Like a storage room. In this script, Finale will use this staff as a garage to work on your trumpet part while it’s constructing your drum track.
2. Set up document options for “Layer 4” Document/Document Options/ Layers – options for Layer 4 Freeze stems and ties up. Adjust floating rests by 6 steps. Save and close. This ensures your drum shots will land face up..
3. Set up staff style: “25. Jazz Drums” (this is what it’s called in my script. If you change the name, change the locator in the script..) Staff Menu / Define Staff Styles click “New” enter “25. Jazz Drums” “Appearance” (on right hand side) locate “alternate notation” and click “settings”. Select “slash notation” at top. Lower down where it says “other layers” check “notes” and “expressions”. Save and close. This ensures Finale create slashes in layer 1 but leaves the notes from your shots copied into layer 4 alone.
4. Clean up – Work in layer 4 and edit your drum part – take out ties, add rests, basically reduce it as much as you can to eighth notes. Tweak or add any special stuff you need to, delete notation in bars of rest, etc.
Hope this proves helpful and not too confusing!
Cheers and good writing :) David david@davidschindlermusic.com Toronto, Canada
//Create Jazz Drum Part script for Finale 2012
//start script process current document //select the part with the shots. select instrument 5 //(Or whatever part # you want to use. I usually use the lead trumpet) //copy selected part to clipboard copy //move to utility line select instrument 12 //(or wherever your utility line is located) paste //reduce to common note plug in "single pitch" type "F5" press enter //move to drum part copy select instrument 11 //(or wherever your drum part is located) paste //change layers move layer 1 to layer 4 //(you will need to make sure document options for layer 4 are set correctly) //apply staff style menu item "tools/staff" menu item "staff/apply staff style to current part/score" select "25. Jazz Drums" //(You will need to create a staff style called 25. Jazz Drums) press enter //end script
