Please correct me if I'm wrong about any of this, but I'm pretty disappointed to see that there are no instructions bundled with version 9.0 (or that I could quickly find on the site) about updating or upgrading a previous version of smartmusic.

I have version 8.5.1 installed right now, and I'm not sure if I should uninstall that first and then install 9.0, install 9.0 and then uninstal 8, etc.

It also doesn't make much sense to me to make us download a 555+ meg file (the ENTIRE application) instead of a simple update. Since I'm using cable it's not a big problem for me, but I imagination it's a hassle for someone with dialup, as they'd have to have a CD shipped to them.

I was hoping that when I opened the 9.0 installer there would be more options that just "easy install" and "uninstall". Since it says the easy install will take over 675 megs, i'm assuming it's not an update. What's my best course of action here? (i'm thinking I should probably uninstall SmartMusic 8 first)

SmartMusic 9 will be installed like a “new” program. What this means is that it does not depend on or alter any previous installation of SmartMusic. Because the program is installed separately from any previous edition there are no required actions necessary to install this new version.

While there are no REQUIRED actions of all users, we do have some recommendations to make the transition easier.

LAPTOP USERS: If you use SmartMusic on a laptop that utilizes multiple network capable devices such as a wireless adapter, Airport card, Bluetooth or a LAN connection, it is recommended that you move your subscription from your earlier version of SmartMusic, and reactivate it with your new SmartMusic 9.

To move your subscription from one computer to another:

     1)  Start the current SmartMusic program and finish the setup wizard.

     2)  open the Subscription menu and select Move Subscription.

     3)  You will be prompted for your user name and password, when you press OK your subscription will be deactivated.

     4)  After installing SmartMusic 9 start the program by double clicking on the icon that is placed on your desktop.

     5)  Press the activate button.

     6)  Enter your username/email address and password.

     7)  Press Log in.

     8)  Select the subscription you want to activate and press OK.

Run SmartMusic Studio and verify your subscription is active on your computer.

A subscription can normally be transferred a maximum of 3 times. If you need to transfer your subscription more than 3 times, please use http://www.smartmusic.com/support or call (800) 843-2066 Monday through Friday 8:30AM-5PM CST.

ALL USERS: Because SmartMusic 9 is installed separately from any previous installation, you may wish to uninstall your previous edition of SmartMusic to conserve Hard Drive space. If you wish to uninstall the previous version, it is recommended that you uninstall the previous edition before installing SmartMusic 9.

Thanks for the reply, it's very helpful.

Since I'm using an iBook G4 with an Airport Express card, I guess I'll move my subscription. Just out of curiosity though, why is that recommended?

I believe the short answer to the question is that because network interface devices on notebooks often change (not hooked up, not connected, etc.), they can confuse SM into thinking that the machine the subscription was granted to and the machine SM is now installed on are not one and the same, and you can thus lose your activation and have no way to activate without contacting MakeMusic. Perhaps the local installation of SM 8.x is keeping track of alternate hardware configurations that are still considered to be the "same machine," and SM 9.0 doesn't have access to this. Either way, I think the reason is to avoid the possible hassle of having to contact MakeMusic for them to reset our subscription so that we may activate.
