I've been reading about the difficulties people are having with the cautionary accidentals plug-in but can't find any reference to the problem that I'm experiencing. When I use the wretched thing it seems to put parentheses around the first iteration of an accidental in the bar but not around subsequent ones - surely this should be the other way round? I suppose it doesn't really matter except that it looks unprofessional - since realising this, however, I've been looking at what the plug-in has done to my score in general - I don't think this is very good news at first glance.

Looking at scribbles on parts which have been returned by players over the years, the most frequent comments are about Finale's seeming disdain for cautionary accidentals - except that the players don't blame the software, they blame the composer!

It's easy - don't use plug-in. Hit asterix * which will force the accidental, then hit p (for parenthesis) and you'll have the cautionary accident looking like it should look. Always been like that in Finale. The composer/Finale user is to blame, not Finale (as i many other cases).

Erling,

You should be able to get an accidental with parenthesis by just hitting p - no need to hit * first.

Well yes, I realise you can do every single accidental manually - just like when we used to write everything out by hand! I just thought that it might be possible to expect a degree of automation, given that we're living in 2007, Finale has been around for nearly 20 years and it isn't exactly a cheap programme! And if we're not to expect that, perhaps it would be better if things that don't work were not included in the first place.

Anyway, thanks for pointing out my inadequacies - ouch!

Hi there,

I was having this same problem (bizarre parentheses around accidentals after using the cautionary accidentals plug-in), and I found (again bizarrely) that changing the default font from Maestro to Engraver seems to make the problem go away and to make the cautionary accidentals plug-in work properly.

And I agree that going through a score note by note to show accidentals is not an appropriate solution.

That's good news - I'll try it tomorrow. Thanks also for your supportive comment.

Actually, that doesn't work after all.

You can also try using the tgtools accidentals plug-in, which might work depending on what you are trying to get.

Actually, the *, p method doesn't work for me...I only get the first half of the parentheses ie. (#
Any ideas?

The half parenthesis is a goofy screen thing. It prints out correctly.
