Forword: ignore the formatting, I haven't gotten that far yet.

Several items in this document won't play back:

- The 2nd violas, at least at their initial entry
- The crotales

Any suggestions appreciated.

Regarding the crotales, the set that Finale uses is not compatible with the transposition you are using. They sampled the set for real pitch entry, not transposed entry. Also, it's only a one octave set, and you are using notes outside the octave.

Not sure about the Viola yet.

I see the mod wheel for Viola in the Aria player is at zero. However, even raising it doesn't give playback for the opening sustained harmonic.

P.S.: Ah. The note it is trying to play is out of range of the sample.

Finale and Crotales has been a mess for some time. Since the sample was created to be written without transposition, but the wizard chooses to use a 2 octave transposition, very few users know what to do. I set the transposition to none and enter the notes as they should be written. The sample plays the notes transposed. You'll have to ignore the yellow notes telling you you're out of range. That's just one of the byproducts of the poor programming. I don't think anybody at MakeMusic is even aware of the issue, even though I reported this at least 2 years ago, maybe more.

There's only one octave of notes available in the GIfF sample. If you use other samples, you might have more, And the Garritan full set might actually have the correct transposition. I am using GIfF.

Zuill, just to confirm on the viola range issue: even with changing the Instrumental Ranges to Advanced, that only gets me up to A5 because that's all the program acknowledges, correct? It's occurring to me that I face the same problem in my first cellos for their initial entry...

So my only workarounds are:

- Create a separate playback version of the document and do the violas and cellos as... all violins or something.
- Create separate staves in this version doing the above, and hide them, since the program won't play back the displayed staves anyway because of the range limitation.

Thanks.

The GPO solo violas go up to 3 octaves above middle C. The group violas go up to only 2 octaves above middle C. Pretty standard ranges for orchestral groups and soloists.

I believe GIfF is what is being used. And the issue is harmonics here. Harmonics go outside the normal playable range of an instrument easily. A harmonic seems to have the same range limitation as the normally playable notes. I am guessing that the sample set doesn't take this into consideration.
