I'm guessing there's better way to do this. I like to create reduced, stemless, parenthesized notes to indicate the sounding pitches for artificial harmonics.

Most of it is easy. I use special tools to kill the stems, percent tool to bring the noteheads down to 65%.

When I try to apply the articulation parens, though, positioning is a bit of a nightmare. They go immediately where they're supposed to on application, but then upon redraw they appear considerably lower, and need to be dragged up through a series of trial and error till I get it right. (it always looks one way right when being dragged, and another any time the screen is redrawn).

Worth mentioning: I have the fingered notes (stopped and harmonic) in layer 2, and the paren note in layer 1.

Help improve this workflow for me if you can!

I would set up the parentheses so that they have their default positioning precisely where they should be.

Then just put them at their default positioning - with no manual adjustment.

You can create the parentheses with the Articulation Tool or with the Expression Tool.

You might want to consider picking a note font that has the note with the parentheses in one glyph. Choose this font and character for just tho one notehead.

Zuill - can you recommend one? Peter - that's what I'm trying to do. The default positioning looks great initially, but anything that causes a redraw makes the correct positioning get lost.

Are you saying that a Redraw causes some sort of Manual Positioning - without you making any manual positionings?
That sounds very strange.

We may need to see an actual Finale document.
I suggest that you attach it here.

This sounds like the famous Dancing Articulations bug. Generally, the articulation in this case does NOT show up properly while being dragged, but DOES show up in the proper position after hitting cmd-D to redraw.

It apparently is linked to staff reduction and multiple layers (which I use ALL the time.) Certain articulations with certain positioning settings seem to be affected more than others, like fermatas, caesuras, breath commas, etc., and now parentheses.

If I can see a sample of the look you want, then I can probably make a recommendation.

This must be the thing. I have multiple layers, and the 1st layer note is reduced in size.

The problem in Finale is when you flip the stems.
You must enter upsteam notes in the layer that will show upsteam, and enter downsteam notes in the layer they will appear downsteam, without flipping.
And than you add the articulation.
