I have just ordered a SmartMusic disc, so I will eventually find out the answer by myself.

It is time to upgrade the computer in the office, where music will be played.  Left to my own devices, I would go with eco-friendly computing in a low power Zotac box with a HDMI output.  This box has a low-power consumption Intel Atom 330 1.6 GHz processor AND a Nvidia graphics co-processor.  I currently use one in the living room as a home theater PC with Windows 7.

This thing has a Windows experience processor subscore of about 3.3, well below the SmartMusic requirement of 4.5 .  Is this likely to work acceptably?  Like I said, I will able to test it on the one I already have, but I am interested in anyone's thoughts.

It might. My 3.2Ghz has a processor score of 3.9 which is a bit better but not by a huge amount. My base score is 3.6 caused by my graphics card - bit surprised at that since it is an ATI card not built-in graphics but built-in graphics aren't all that bad in newer systems.

I consider this system to be quite adequate for running SmartMusic.

The only bench-mark that counts is running the actual application, anything else is just a rough guide.

Let us know how it works.

Andybuzz,

I'm pretty confident that you won't get an ideal experience using SmartMusic with a netbook - we found Atom processors are not up to the task in most cases. We have a short article in our knowledge base (smartmusic.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1566/) with a little more information, but it comes down to SmartMusic needing to play and record at the same time, which is much more strenuous than just playing or recording.

You are welcome to try it out (we have a 30-day return policy you can use if necessary), but I wanted to make sure you weren't disappointed if it doesn't work out. You'll probably hear skipping, "crackling" and other audio artifacts when using the program, which will get worse on longer pieces.

Thanks,

James Lund

I really appreciate the feedback. It sounds like what I will need to is to try recording and playing at the same time while monitoring the task manager on my existing Atom, then if it looks like it is a little too much for it I will know to try something a little zippier for the office upgrade.

I remain somewhat hopeful the Nvidia co-processor will take enough of the load off the main Atom processor for it to work well.

Well, I goofed up my question completely when I said I had an Atom 330:  I had forgotten that I waited until they made these little computer boxes with an Intel D510 which is quite a little boost in performance.  Indeed, with this D510 and 4 gig of memory and a dedicated graphics co-processor, it looks like the box hardly breaks a sweat when my daughter uses it in recording mode.  The processor is typically using 28 percent or so, and only blips up to 50 or 60% when loading a piece of music (not while actually running it).  I am confident that I will be buying a similar computer for the office that will meet our projected needs.

As for the SmartMusic product itself - my daughter finds it "awesome", and I would have to agree.  I may break out my dusty trumpet and try to become a musician.  We may have received the full value of the annual subscription in 1 evening.

What is the Windows Experience score for this setup over the Atom 330 score?
Thanks

From what I undestand from others, the processor subscore of the D510 is not all that different from the Atom 330.  I have never had a 330, can't say much with authority.

I've found the most important thing when running on a lower end processor is to be running windows 7 with at least 2GB of RAM. Windows XP has a crap sound processing back end and SM runs like garbage. The same hardware upgraded to Win 7 runs quite well. You may experience some popping or crackling in more intense accompaniments, which will through off sync if you're recording it. I have found that 2011 runs fine for a practice tool as long as you've got Windows 7.
