Hello all! Here's my long-winded story, and I hope someone (especially Finale higher-ups) can comment and help me out.

I've been a Mac user for years, it got me through the last four years during my undergrad. Finale worked perfectly, and the support for pinch-to-zoom was fantastic. However, the recent issues with Finale and El Capitan has made me question my allegiance to the Mac. So the big question:

Has anyone tried to use Finale 2014 on the Surface Pro 3 (since the 4 isn't out quite yet) and been successful?

While I realize that Finale isn't optimized for touchscreen devices, with the Surface running a full Windows 10 OS, I know that it at least has the capability to run the program. I tested the program tonight on my friend's device, and I was quite thrilled with the responsiveness.

If anyone has any input, or would like to tell me that I should stick with the MacBook Pro and iPad Air that I currently have, please do.....THANKS!

Dan

The problems with upgrading to El Capitan will be resolved with the release of 2014.5, which is due out at the end of November. Might be best to wait till then and assess the new version before such a radical decision.

But even with 2014.5, Finale won't run on an iPad.

So, if tablet use is a primary need, the Surface may be the way to go.

The SP4 is out today. I doubt that there's support of pinch-to-zoom, though I haven't tried it.

I've been using Finale on a SP3 for almost a year now, and no major problems so far. I currently have an issue with the Mixer view not showing all my instruments, and it can't be resized, but I can do pretty much everything I need it for using the Score Manager. I don't know if that's a SP3 thing, or Win10. Probably the former, as I seem to remember it happening prior to Win10.

Otherwise, Finale works really well on my system... and much faster than my old desktop. Sounds load too fast to watch, and I expect the SP4 to be even better. I'm hoping Threshold 2 (due out in November) clears up the remaining problems I'm having. Again... none of them showstoppers for me. In fact, I chalk them up to the usual Finale niggles I've had to work around since version 2.

The Finale Mixer has a limited width even on desktops.

The width isn't so much the issue. Always before I could scroll to the last instrument in the list, but now I can't. I can only see what is visible when the dialog box first opens.

How does Finale work on the Surface without keyboard? Do you have to drag the pointer around with your finger, and then tap to click?

I don't use it without the keyboard. Finger taps work pretty much as you would expect, though. I can open an edit frame in Speedy with a tap, but without a keyboard it's pretty useless. If you don't want to buy the TypeCover, you can always get a cheap Bluetooth keyboard for entry. I use my SP3 with a MS docking station (great design) and my keyboard, mouse, and two additional monitors and it just works. The SP3 is driving the two external monitors (3840X2160, and 1900X1200) along with its native 2160X1440 without a hiccup.

Add that to the fact that it runs StaffPad brilliantly, and I'm pretty much set.

I can verify that pinch to zoom does not work.

Seemingly not, from what weeksc says.

Wiggy,

Not exactly what I said. If use on a tablet is a primary need, the I recommend StaffPad as the input model, and Finale for everything else. Also, the onscreen keyboard works fine in a pinch, if you don't mind a small workspace. I can dock the OS keyboard at the bottom of the tablet in portrait mode, and have quite a bit of space above that for music. Not ideal, but nothing ever is.

What you describe is exactly what I'm contemplating. Use Staffed on a Surface for inputting and capturing ideas when you're not at your desk. Then import to Finale on my iMac via xml for making everything pretty on Finale. Have you tried this? Does it work for you? Dave
