Which particular VM are you using? VirtualBox by Oracle?
I've just had a look at a couple of things.
1) For windows guest OS's VirtualBox only offers AC97 or Soundblaster 16 emulation. There is an advanced feature to allow for PCI passthrough, but it looks like it is only supported on Solaris, Windows or Linux hosts. 2) If your MIDI interface is USB, then have a look at the USB settings (chapter 3 of the manual) 3) If you still cannot get MIDI to pass through, then you might try to use Midi over network. If you can create a virtual network connection between the host and guest system, you might be able to configure the host system (ie MacOS) to pipe the midi over the network to the guest system. On the guest system you would need to install something like rptMIDI and configure that to make a connection to your host system.
Other than that, I'm not certain where to go. At the very least, you can see if there are support forums for the Virtual Machine you are using and pose the question there.
Cheers... Daz. :o)
