Hi,

I'm running Windows 10 inside Virtual Box on my MacBook Pro (OS X El Capitan). In Finale in the windows virtual machine, is it possible to receive the midi signal sent into my Mac via my external midi keyboard and interface?

Thanks for any help.

I have done so. My audio signal seems to be able to route itself correctly whether or not I have the drivers installed. However, the MIDI signal escapes me. Finale's MIDI setup window shows I have no input devices. The audio setup window only shows the default driver. My Windows Virtual Machine's system sound "playback" tab shows only "speakers" and "headphones," and there is nothing listed under the "recording" tab (meanwhile, my interface has 4 mic/line channels).

Hi Alex

Which particular VM are you using? VirtualBox by Oracle?

I've just had a look at a couple of things.

1) For windows guest OS's VirtualBox only offers AC97 or Soundblaster 16 emulation. There is an advanced feature to allow for PCI passthrough, but it looks like it is only supported on Solaris, Windows or Linux hosts.
2) If your MIDI interface is USB, then have a look at the USB settings (chapter 3 of the manual)
3) If you still cannot get MIDI to pass through, then you might try to use Midi over network. If you can create a virtual network connection between the host and guest system, you might be able to configure the host system (ie MacOS) to pipe the midi over the network to the guest system. On the guest system you would need to install something like rptMIDI and configure that to make a connection to your host system.

Other than that, I'm not certain where to go. At the very least, you can see if there are support forums for the Virtual Machine you are using and pose the question there.

Cheers...

I got it; I just needed to tell VirtualBox to connect my interface to the virtual machine when it noticed it attached to the host (by creating a filter in the USB settings). Then I installed ASIO4ALL and everything works as normal!

So I didn't need step 1 or 3. Thanks for the suggestions!
