Well, I looked in the manual and I got tired of looking through Coda Search...here goes: I used set pickup measure (anacrusis is a much nicer term...so very Latin, but I digress,) the piece is in 4, the first measure (the pickup) has a quaver (an eighth note for our U.S friends)...BUT! when I notate the last bar, leaving out the pickup note Finale (2002) puts a quaver rest in...giving me 4 beats in the last bar when there should be only 3 and a half! Does this make sense? Can someone please help?........the street is loaded with darkness...
thanks,
Jack Kerouac

I'm a little too mellow this morning to open Finale and find the specifics, but there are "fill measure with rests" options in both Simple and Speedy tools that you should deactivate.

Finale does not deal automatically with incomplete measures that complement pickup measures. Understandable, because Finale cannot know what the 'last' measure is, particularly if it only ends a section and not the entire piece.
You could just hide the final rest, but this messes up the spacing and doesn't play back correctly.
So you have to deal with it the way we used to deal with pickups, i.e., in your example, set the Time Signature for the incomplete measure to 3/4, but employ the Use a Different Time Signature for Display option to have it display as 4/4.
