I have a few sets of slurred and barred eighth notes. They're just a bit too close together. How can I change the spacing between these notes without adjusting the overall spacing of all the notes in the document?

I feel like it would be a really obvious tool somewhere that would do this, but I can't seem to find it.

Use the note position tool. (It's the first one in the special tools palette.)

Remember too, that you can usually correct spacing issues by moving a measure(s) up/down to the next system.  Also using the Page Layout Tool, you can assign a given number of measures to a system(s) and arrange them neatly spaced to fill out a page with symmetric spacing.  Page layout is usually left to the end of your workflow.

Or you can try respacing the measure in question with a different algorithm. The JW plug-in is good for this.

Or you can use the beat spacing to shift the entire beat, rather than a single note.

If you select the MEASURE tool & click the BOTTOM of the 2 selection squares at the top of the barline to the right of the intended measure, a window opens above the measure with vertical lines with boxes at either end. if you put your cursor on the lower box, you can use it to drag notes, and the notes in the grouped staves also move as well, maintaining the alignment.

If you just have a single staff, that is irrelevant- but for years I had the inconvenience of trying to eye-ball the lower staff to keep an alignment, using the note-mover tool in the special tools menu. I even asked tech support how to do it, but they didn't know. I'm not sure how I discovered the technique. I write songs with lyrics, so that makes un-even spacing of barred notes, so I have to nudge lyrics & notes to be aesthetically pleasing to myself. I still have Finale 2010, so have not had the experience of the new feature which claims to space lyrics better.

Hope this helps!

The method Karen describes is the "beat chart" spacing method Mike refers to.  Karen may not know that by double clicking on the upper handle, a "Beat Chart" dialog box opens up where you can make adjustments to the beat chart that cannot be made simply by dragging the upper handle.

Charles, I'm probably missing something obvious, but when I double click on the upper handle, the measure attributes dialog box appears. I don't know how to display the beat chart DBX.

Right click a measure and a drop box will appear. Look near the end of that box.
Select the top handle of a linked note box by left dble clicking it.

Click and hold the lower box/handle to drag to position.
Or.
As above, open the beat spacing box and enter Elapsed duration, Position and End position by numeric entry.

First click on the lower handle and the beat spacing chart opens. Then double click on the upper handle of a specific beat.

Why do we need the beat chart when any entry in the measure will undo the position?
I have found that in MuseScore you can edit beat positions and they keep fixed (=recalculated in spacing).

I've never really needed to use it.

I'd be curious how many of us actually do use it or even find it useful to their work?

Thanks, I'm not sure how often this is needed but at least I understand how to get to it now.

Not using often doesn't imply it is not useful. :-)
But here I will explain it more closely.

The Note Mover tool is good when you need to adjust position only of that note. This is useful when you have multi-voiced music, as it is with keyboard pieces of Bach. If voices collide, you need to adjust one voice at the time.

The Beat Chart tool is extremely useful when you need to adjust position not only of one note, but the horisontal alignment of all notes vertically connected with that beat chart.
For engravers with very sharp eye it is very useful, for instance, in dense music you need to adjust some (sub-)beats to get more correct note spacing. For instance, kerning is one of the most neglected principles in Finale-engraving:

At the places marked with * either to much or to little distance is taken in account for spacing. This can be edited only by correct kerning, and use of the Beat Chart COULD BE USEFUL if it could keep the tones re-spaced (keep it fixed).

Another example of Finale output and fixed (though not perfect) spacing with both accidentals- and beat chart-kerning:

Of course, this kerning includes other voices in other staffs; not only this note was moved (Note Mover) but all vertically aligned (beat chart).

While we are on the subject, in the Measure Tool dropdown menu there is an option to "Show Measure Spacing Handles".  Two more handles appear on the bottom line of each measure.  These handles mark the extreme left and right vertical boundaries within which notes can be placed in the measure.  You can drag them left or right to open spaces before and after the notes in a measure for whatever purpose you may need it.

Yes, that I have used on quite a few occasions.
You can also open up the Beat chart by clicking the lowest box....dble clicking the top box of that opens the numeric entry box.
