I wanted to know which instrument to use on SmartMusic when playing a C Clarinet.
I ended up in an anti-c debate.  Nice views but not helpful.

I have both a Bb and a C clarinet.
Amati makes a great C clarinet.  Around $800 (not-plastic), but WWBW had it on sale for $655.
Also Forte modifies the Amati clarinet...a little more expensive.
I have a Florte Bb clarinet.

Clif,

Let me make sure I'm understanding: You have a C Clarinet, and you want to use it to play Bb Clarinet music inside SmartMusic. Is that correct?

If so, you will find options in the Exercises, Solos and Jazz Improvisation categories repertoire to transpose the key. You can transpose down a Major 2nd, or if there is an option to transpose by instrument (as in the Solos), the closest option we have for you would be the C Trumpet. Personally, I would use the key signature method, it will be more accurate.

If I'm off the mark on what you are trying to do, please let us know.

Thanks,

Travis Shepard

If I remember correctly, full band and orchestra music in SmartMusic (as opposed to exercises, jazz improv, etc) does not allow automatic transposition. As a trumpet player playing mostly on a C trumpet, I'm in a similar boat with the band literature and have to sight-transpose from the Bb parts. SmartMusic hears the pitches it expects, and will assess correctly.

For band/orchestra music you may need to do something similar...

Nysa,

Yes, you are correct. For Large Ensemble and Method Book repertoire, the tranposition method I described above is not available, so transposing at sight would be the only way for Clif to use a C Clarinet to play the Bb Clarinet part on your screen.
