This is not something I regularly need, nor have I ever done it in Finale (although I have notated in this way occasionally in past manuscripts).

How is it best in Finale to have phrases for semi-improvised repetition and semi-random playing order placed in boxes on the several score staves?

I would be interested to read about forum members' ways of doing this that have led to effective past performance. I have no idea how to find anything useful about this in the Finale help - all my search attempts have led to dead ends.

More on my particular case. During the course of a 25 minute piece of visual projections and music, there is to be a 7 minute section of video accompanied by music. This video will be gentle at its beginning and end, more active, almost violent in the middle. The three musicians, cello, mixed percussion and piano, will have material composed by me on which to expand and improvise during the video. The audience should be aware that the music is reflecting the video, but fairly loosely rather than absolutely coinciding with it (as was very likely once attempted more or less successfully by Shostakovich in his piano accompaniments to silent films).

There is almost a year before this is due to be rehearsed and performed, but I'm thinking that providing the performers with music written into boxes may be the best answer. Cues for change will most likely come from the pianist, since he will have the score on his stand (with the cello and percussion parts on reduced staves) and also be seated in the best position to follow the video.

Does one draw a Shape Designer box outline round the relevant notes, add instructions including metronome with the Text Tool, use hidden tuplets to fit to the required space, plus hide any barlines? Or is there another way to do this sort of thing in Finale?

Viable playback is assumed to be an irrelevant impossibility.

You can use a measure attached text box that has a frame. Double click, hold on the second click to draw it. Pick "Standard Frame" from the text menu, set the line weight and text inset. You can drag the borders of the frame to fit the desired size.
