I've been told that it's possible to make your own "Sing By Ear" exercises, like the "Play By Ear" exercises pre-loaded into SmartMusic.
I've attempted it a couple of times, but if I choose not to view the music on-screen and load it up as an assignment, the program (logically) does no offer the option to score it.

So, it's a good practice tool, but I want to assign it and have it assessed by SmartMusic.
Any suggestions?

Thanks!
Cynthia

Do you mean sight-reading for singers? If so, yes. But you'll need Finale 2012a (current at the time of writing) and SmartMusic 2012a (also current at the time of writing) to do so. Earlier versions of Finale and SmartMusic do not work for making vocal assessments.

When you create the Finale file, you can export it as a SmartMusic file, and SmartMusic will ask you if you wish to save the file as an accompaniment or assessment. When you enter SmartMusic (on a computer, not SmartMusic Inbox for the iPad), you import the SmartMusic assessment, and then assign it to your students.

Something I've learned...if you are dealing with SATB, make a staff for each voice part using the clef of your choice (perhaps the treble tenor clef if your sight reading exercises are all in the treble clef). Your students can select the appropriate voice part when they are taking the test.

Let me know if you need further assistance.

Cynthia,

You'll need Finale 2012a (and SmartMusic 2012a!) to create vocal assessment SMP files. If you have the most current version of both and are still having problems, send the .MUS file to our Finale tech support team to get started (they can help with SmartMusic too, but they'll have to eyeball the file in Finale). You can submit a support case at makemusic.custhelp.com/app/ask for the Finale folks.

Thanks!

Thanks for the replies. But ... let me try again:

Sing-by-Ear exercises are like the Play-by-Ear exercises, except for singers. These are not sight singing exercises.

The Play-by-Ear exercises display as alternating between a blank measure and a measure with only the first note notated.
Students listen during the blank measure. Given only the first note to play in the next measure, they play by ear the motive they heard during the first measure.

I've been attempting to make my own Sing-By-Ear gradable exercises.
As I originally explained, I can figure out how to make it play, but not how to make it assess a performance.

Thanks!
Cynthia

Cynthia,

What you are looking for might be better served by asking on the finale forum to see if you can write it first. Just a thought...
