I received a file done in an older version, for revision. I started working on it in Windows, and then brought it to the Mac. The original file shows the correct Finale icon. The newer file, done in (and saved in) 2012, shows a piece of paper with the statement Unable to open document. It has been saved in an older version of Finale. However, double clicking launches 2012, and opens the file correctly.

Another similar project, worked on entirely in 2012 on the Mac, shows the correct icons. Any idea what's up?

Right click / Get Info - and see if the default is Finale 2012.
Another thing is that the extension is missing. You can check it there too. (must be *.mus)

Mike:

I think you need to update your signature to reflect the equipment you are using. It says you are "Still happily on Windows XP, SP3." Yet it appears you have been bitten by the Mac bug. Since your advice has always been to have the proper info in the signature, it might be time to update. I might update my signature soon, after I finish my trial period for 2012.

Mike,

I get a lot of files from different people and see the different icons. I don't worry about it, then when I save it on my machine it gets the correct icon. I've never seen the error message you quoted, so I can't help you there. I do refrain from double clicking an icon to launch Finale though. Since I have different versions of Finale on my machine, I usually boot up the version I want to work in, then I'll double click an icon to work on that file.

Well, that's interesting. It now shows the correct icon, but the message still shows in the previews pane.

Mike,

Sounds like your QuickLook plugin must be a 2010 or 2011 version so it can't open the 2012 file. This problem with QuickLook happens on Mac when you have multiple versions of Finale installed, and have installed an older version after a new one, because every year they update the plug-in to work with the newest version of Finale. If you install an older version of Finale after you've installed the newer version, then the only files that can be previewed in QuickLook will be the ones from that year or older. To fix it, you'll have to delete the QuickLook plugin files currently installed and then reinstall 2012.

Or restore the newer (older!) plug-in from your Time Machine backup.

Yes, that's what I did. I figured I'd start with the current one, and add the others as I needed them.

Try to re-install 2012, but not the whole, only that plugin. Not sure where it is located (when "custom install")
