I carry my MacBook Pro to gigs occasionally as my "Fake Book," but it is cumbersome, and not tall enough, not to mention out of style with the music I play. An IPad, although still smaller than standard 8X10, would hopefully come a lot closer to the experience of reading (turning pages, etc.). I'm aware I could turn finale files into pdfs, and then load them on iPad, but I would much prefer keeping the file in finale, so that I can edit, change the key, etc. on the fly.
Anyone have any thoughts on the subject? I'm wondering how many others would be interested. I'm not optimistic, because when I searched for "ipad" nothing came up. | Back to Top

"Style" really wasn't the right word. I play in smoky, low-end (in this economy) jazz clubs, where tunes get called very quickly. I play many different pianos. A laptap is often hard to set up (for example, with an upright.)
When I can afford one, I'll see how it does with pdfs. $499 is not that outrageous if you compare it with lugging fakebooks to every gig.
Thanks for the response. | Back to Top

Most of the music students at the universities and colleges in our area (DFW, TX) have a copy. I have them loaded on my ancient 12" Powerbook G4 and they are a life saver when someone asks for an obscure tune in a club. It would probably be very easy to store them on an iPad and also more readable compared to the horizontal layout of the laptop. Even loading a leadsheet from Finale is problematic with a horizontal format.
I'm thinking about buying one if I can get a good demo at the local Apple store to see how quickly you can turn pages, screen size, etc. Although it would be cool to change keys, etc., most of the time it is more important just to get through the tune (singers beware).
PDF's on any device will be a good idea. We just need the get the manufacturers to get the price down on the devices. | Back to Top

Thanks so much for finding that. | Back to Top

It's great except when there's too much music on the page (ie. the music is too small for my ageing eyes. The other problem, for me is going thru all the different indexes Indices??/ If been slowly picking songs from these, and saving them as just one file into my personal collection. In some cases (there's a "classical" fake book out there) I have split the pages in 2, cut off both margins and therefor been able to see the notes.
I'm sure there is a better way, but to turn pages, I put the curser on the down arrow, and click it when I need to. Very inexact.
Thanks for the input. I hope you will post on here about your trip to the apple store looking at the iPad. Take care. | Back to Top

I guess I'm presuming by the time I have enough bucks to get one, there will be (probably already is) "an app for that!" | Back to Top

There is a RealBook app for iphone that may be iPad compatible. this might have some tunes in there for your use...and it will transpose the tune to another key. This won't help with custom files, but thought you'd find it interesting. I forgot what it was called - don't have my iphone with me right now...I have it and it looks pretty handy. It is called iReal Book, but only offers chord changes, no melodies, no lyrics (for obvious copyright reasons). It is very nice indeed. More than 900 songs from the jazz and standards repertoire. I have the iPad version on my iPad and it is very readable for use as a sheet music display device. Put your iPad on a music stand, load a 4-page piece of music in your reader, put the music stand 3 feet away, and perform the piece in real time.
Then verify your prior statement, please.

But if he indicates: "I want you to perform and respond to this music," then his fundamental duty is to write his music so that it is accessible to interpretation. When the performer cannot approach the composer's meaning because of capriciously obscure notation, he may in effect say to the composer: "Why should I bother to puzzle out your music?" - Gardner Read | Back to Top

I do choral singing. It seems to me that the iPad would only display one system of 4-parts plus piano. Maybe one vocal line plus piano would show two systems. Is your experience different? I like to see what's coming up, and I think that one system at a time would be a pain with constant page turns, rather than seeing one or two pages at a time. Mike Rosen www.specialmillwork.com

Thanks for reporting your experience. I find the size of the music to be fine on the iPad both for singing and piano, but the reflections from the glossy screen are not. Is this a problem for you? If so, have you tried any of the anti-glare options?
On my Lowrey with a nice bottom lighting system, the glare isn't an issue at all. On my other 3 organs that don't have that, the glare is tolerable for me, but I am considering getting an anti-glare screen cover for other uses. You are probably correct in what you can see on the iPad for your use, and there are no foot pedals or other things to make page turning a bit less cumbersome. Or turn the iPad to the tall side, might offer a bit more. And since trying it costs nothing but time, it should be worth it. Assuming you have an iPad, of course.
