It is a scripting language - like Applescript - for automating your own sequences of Finale commands.

The most common use that I see is the "search & replace" function. If you have a score and set of extracted parts that you find a mistake on, say you've typed "Allegroo". You can do a search and replace changing "Allegroo" to "Allegro" in a whole folder of files with one click. You can also select a folder of files and import a document option setting from a master file into all files at once. I use Finalescript everyday to batch print entire folders of music with one click. There's a Finalescript that you can use to Swap layers 1 & 2. Changing one font to another in many files with just one click.

Many users stay away from Finalescript because the documentation is rather intimidating. It's best to take some sample files and just start playing around with the preset scripts. After you start to get it, try altering those scripts or creating your own. Any task that you find yourself repeating on different files would be worth investigating the Finalescript command reference list. If your task is something that can be scripted, it'd be worth your time to learn how to use it.

Is there a way to have Finale '08 search for all Finale files on my computer and resave them as '08 files? If so - how would I do that?

p.s. explain it as if you were talking to a 5 year old. I'm totally new to finalescript.

There is a script, "Convert files to current Finale format" that will convert all to 2008. But it will not do a complete search of your computer for files to change. You need to point Finalescript at one folder at a time. Then run the script. It doesn't matter if the folder contains one file or a thousand.

Hope this helps,
JT

Unless you add batch process subfolder to your script. Then it will scan the whole folder hierarchy (from the chosen parent folder which can be the HD root itself)
