I am wondering why every time a new
version of Finale comes out, all older
versions are immediately incompatible.
There is simply no need for this at all,
except, it would appear to me, Finale's
desire to make more money. It's
frustrating. I have friends that I send files
to, and unless we are all at the same
version level, we are in a bit of a bind.
Yes, I know I can download their Notepad,
but why is this situation existing?

Word processors give you the option of
saving in various older versions of its
program, even versions of other
programs. Sure, some new versions
have such new ways of doing things that
backwards compatibility might be a
problem. But most of the time it looks,
quite frankly, like a Finale-money-grab. I
think maybe it's time for Finale users to
adress this issue.

This issue comes up all the time. Do a search of the Windows side of the forum for "Backwards Compatibility" and you'll be able to see the arguments/reasons why this is very difficult to do.

There is the Music XML plugin which can export more information than MIDI files can, but apparently it's for Windows only :(

I'm certain that there are new features that
can cause complications, but the fact is
that many high-end software programs
are backwards compatible. And the
essentials of each version (namely,
notating the music) remains the same. In
my opinion, backwards compatibility is an
essential for a program like this.
