FinWin 2014D

I use the Jazz for notation, and the dot on the eighth note is spaced way too far to the right. I can change this with Jari's plugin, but when I reopen the file the change is gone. Also, I don't really understand the purpose of the Opposite button in JW Change (maybe that should be a separate topic). The dot problem is not unique to this version of FinWin - it's been around for several years.

Thanks for any help!

The dot returning to its default position is an old bug. I believe it is out of our control.

As far as opposite, that is used to allow selection of an item in the list, but then have the operation affect all BUT the selection.

Maybe I'm missing something. Can't you change this in Document Options/Augmentation Dots? There are two different distance settings for notes and for upstem flags.

Now that I check back with things, the Augmentation Dot bug affects only rests. Move a dot on a note, and it sticks. Move a dot on a rest and it doesn't.

Zuill, thanks for the confirmation. Is this (yet another) Finale bug, or a JW Plugin bug? I was wondering if this might be something that Jari could fix. Vaughan, if you change the settings in Document Options, you affect the dot spacing for rests AND notes. There is no way (that I know of) to do this separately.

The dot may be the only Finale piece that can't be moved manually.

maybe I'm misunderstanding you, but, the dot can be moved using Special Tools.

Finale (started with ver. 3.0) now using 2012 under Windows 8.1

Hi, Michel - you didn't misunderstand me - I missed that special tool! I just made the adjustments using the Dot Special Tool and closed the file. However, upon reopening the file, the augmentation dot had moved to the far right again - I blame George Bush!

The only "solution" is to move the dots with the JW Change plug-in, then print/pdf the file before I close it.

All that Jari's plugin does is what Special Tools does. The bug does not manifest itself on notes, but on rests. It is a known issue (MakeMusic is aware of it, or was aware of it at one time--maybe they have forgotten about it). The augmentation dot returns to its default position upon re-opening the file again. it doesn't matter if it is done with Special Tools or Jari's plugin.

To get the dot adjustments to stick to a rest after the file has been closed, test this sequence in JW Change:
1. Rests->Placement Style: Moveable
2. Rests->Placement Style: Default-Centered on Staff
3. Augmentation Dots->Horizontal Position: to whatever

This should get the dot adjustment to stay after the file has been saved and closed.

Okay. That works. Is there a way to get the same result without the plugin? Just for my education.

In my experience, it hasn't worked. The "solution" also requires one to apply "Floating" in the rest placement style in order to have the rests appear in the staff, rather than below. Also, I must check counterintuitively check "opposite" on my rest choice in order for the dotted rest to be affected. Once you save and re-open the file, however, everything is as it was. I've recently opened yet another complaint on this issue to MakeMusic only to be told the dot placement is there by design, so what I'm really looking for (I'm told) is a feature request that would allow me to change the spacing of augmentation dots solely on eighth rests. The awful placement is not recognized as a bug or a problem, and in any case, is not to addressed in Finale 25.

Giz,

It works as described by Jari.  You must be using a JW Change Sequence, not the most intuitive operation.  Briefly, here's how:

  • Within JW Change, do the three operations manually to define the actions.
  • open the Sequence Editor.
  • Create a Group.
  • Create a Sequence.
  • Be sure the sequence is selected.
  • Check off the actions to be included and add them to the sequence.  (Reorder them if required.)
  • Save the Sequence.  The Group/Sequence will appear in the JW Change panel at the top.
  • Select the measures with the rests. Apply the sequence.

Zuill,

I have not worked out the details but you can create an AutoHotKey script that will invoke JW Change and select the sequence to run.  It can be triggered by any hot key combination, such as CTRL-ALT-R.  Not the best solution, since it requires AHK, an external utility, but I don't know of another way to choose plug-in options programmatically.  If you want, I can work on it.  I have done similar things in the past.
