Is there a way to make a Finale file useless to someone else except for the ability to play it?

I've been asked to supply a file of an arrangement I've done, but I don't want the people to be able to copy, paste or use as their own work. But, I can't send a PDF or other file format, I still have to send the finale file. Is there something within the file that I can activate to make it un-changeable or un-copyable?

No. Finale does not any form of copy-protection, and even if it did, there is no form of copy-protection that has not been cracked. Secure PDFs, Bluray DVDs, software, games, etc, etc, etc.

If they want/need the Finale file, then you can't stop them from being able to edit it. And even if you gave them a PDF, there's nothing to stop them typing it all in.

Too bad you can’t send a PDF, since a PDF with playback ability would be a solution.
See the attached PDF file.

Maybe a change of outlook… If someone thinks enough of your work to steal it, take it as a compliment. Some of us have may have never had our efforts stolen. mad

Peter: Clicking "Click to Play" does nothing in the file you attached. If there is a way to have a pdf play back sound I'd love to know about it. What I do to share is send an mp3 and a pdf. As far as I know mp3's cannot be edited.

I decided long ago that if some kid in some obscure part of the world wants to present something I wrote as his, there's nothing I can do about. But, what the kid can't do, and what I can do, is write more music of the same quality and voice.

You have make sure that javascript is turned on in Acrobat prefs. Also something else (it flashed at me, and I clicked on the "yeah, yeah: just do it" button).

It won't work in other PDF readers that don't allow javascript execution.

MP3s can easily be edited using many of the tools available these days. Last Saturday morning, I received a request accompany a very elderly friend at our church that evening. She wanted to sing an obscure musical number from a film made more than seventy-five years ago. I searched for the music and wasn't able find it anywhere online. It appears to have gone out of print before WW2 if it was ever actually published in the first place. I did find a clip of it from the film on Youtube! The tune was too complex to transcribe in the time available so I extracted the audio into a WAV, imported it into Audicity and made an mp3 for her. We ran through it and she asked if we could slow down the tempo. This is easy in Audacity. I was able to slow down the tempo by 15% without too many artifacts. I also lowered the pitch (a separate process) by a half step. I imported the results into Celemony and edited a few notes for intonation and duration to help her pick up her cues a little easier. This whole process took less than an hour including including running through it with her. It was a great hit. She does a great Carmen Miranda (fruit hat included!) even in her late eighties.

I agree with Ron. If someone wants to steal my work, go for it. If they take it far enough, they can be pursued legally, but this is usually not worth the effort.

Chris
