Hello. I've been writing a cello solo that has no definite pulse to it, so I would like to be able to compose in free time. What I mean is, I would like to be able to enter notes without having to tie notes over bars, and be able to add notes in the middle of a measure without moving the notes after it to a new bar (because that seems to throw everything off). So far I have tried hiding the time signature and bar-lines, but this does not seem to affect the way Finale parses it when it plays back. So if I have a half note at the end of a bar 11 that extends into the next bar, and I have a note at the beginning of bar 12, the half note will not play all the way. I have tried making a large time signature, like 100/4, but this crams all the notes close together to the point where it is illegible. Another solution (one I have not tried yet) is to constantly change the time signature so that the bar-lines do not interfere with the notes, but this is very tedious. It would be even more of a pain because I've all ready written quite a few measures.

Can anyone think of a more elegant solution? If my previous statement wasn't clear enough, I basically want a staff with no measures, not just visually, but also for playback.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm running Finale 2011 and Windows XP SP3, on a Sony Vaio with a 1.5Ghz duo core processor, and 1GB of RAM.

Set a time signature of 64/4, or something similar, and hide it.

Yes there is a more elegant solution.. hide the time signature and bar lines.. set the time signature for something small, like 1/4 or 1/8, as it is much easier to work with.. hide the stems, hide the rests.. use note attached horizontal smart shapes as duration lines (glissandos work nicely for this, with custom flat line of enough thickness). If you want to hear the extended notes, tie them over to the next measure.

The issue with using a really long time signature is you end up with notes moving around on you (throwing off the notation), because you are relying entirely on the automatic spacing and hoping that Finale will not screw up your manual adjustments.. and then you have a million rests to contend with, etc.

Yes, the free time technique is tricky to notate. There are a few approaches you might find worth trying:

Use tick barlines and write using something like hidden 4/4 time. The ticks show when to reset accidentals and can avoid a headache with needing showing every accidental. If you discover that, even though you're writing sans meter, there is a sort of metrical phrasing that can be represented, use a hidden time signature and tick barlines to represent that.

Use invisible barlines and write using something like hidden 4/4 time. You'd have to write with the invisible barlines in mind though this may help the player keep track of the rhythms.

Use an atrociously large time signature (32/1) and fill up the bars however you please. If you have rests left over, you could reduce the time signature after writing to best encapsulate what you've written.

Other posters have provided alternate suggestions that are worth a shot! Best of luck.

You should use a sequencer, without notation, such as Cubase or ProTools. Simply, you don't care about the notation at that stage. Than, when you have composed your piece, you map the beats, fix the tempo, fix the time signatures and than export to Finale.
Or..
Something like Bach for MAX should help you. But that need some more effort from your side to learn how to use it.

It stays "automated composer" but that is one of the ways you can use it.

He may have composed in his free time but he spent a lot of time in bars.
