In Finale 25, has the function key to tool shortcut been eliminated? For example, in 2014 I was able to hit Function 9 and it would change to the articulation tool. That feature saved countless hours in editing sessions. Please tell me it didn't go away.

As far as I know, Finale has never had F key shortcuts built in. You can, however, use the Mac OS to program menu selection shortcuts and map those to the F keys. This is very handy for selecting tools.

Go to System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts > App Shortcuts. Click the "+" button, choose the Finale version, type in the Menu title, type in the desired shortcut, and you're set. I think you have to restart Finale before any new shortcuts will work.

After several months, I eventually found the Mac OS keyboard shortcuts bothersome. Switching back and forth between Finale and another program like a PDF required extra mouse clicks to regain focus each time.

I would suggest that you get Keyboard Maestro and set up macros to bring up tools and menu items. It has sped up my workflow tremendously, just as promised by members of this forum. And if you have any trouble making Keyboard Maestro work with Finale look at the entry by Rick Bassett under https://forum.keyboardmaestro.com/t/switching-between-applications/3200

Look at this link into the manual.  Your answer is on the 7th & 8th lines under the General dropdown.

These shortcuts are document specific.

Note that a similar feature is found on the Windows side that uses the row of F keys on the top of the keyboard.  Perhaps you are confusing Mac and Win.

I found the items in the manual also, but they are not what I mean. Here's a scan of the work copy that I have been using in Finale 2014. I'm assuming that because I can't access it in Finale 25 that the feature has been removed.

I don't have these shortcuts in 2014, and I certainly would have used them had they been available in earlier versions. You must have created them yourself.

Do they still work in 2014 on your machine? It's possible that the option to use the "Apple" functions is taking priority. Check System Preferences > Keyboard.

I believe that I found them in the manual for 2014 somewhere, but I don't remember for sure. I know that I've been using them for a couple of years and they really speed up the editing process, allowing you to jump from tool to tool as needed.

I have 2014 on my old laptop and just installed 25 on a new iMac. Following the advice of others on this forum, I'm keeping the older version so I can scan and use a couple of plug-ins that are not in the latest version.

It's definitely something you've installed or configured on the old laptop that you haven't done on the new one. Did you migrate all your settings and data over to the new Mac?

No. I wanted to start fresh. I'm looking through the 2014 manual and can't find anything resembling the shortcuts that I have. Perhaps you are right and I programmed them somehow. I just know that I don't use either a macro program or the Apple keyboard shortcuts.

You can get an idea of the process in 25 by choosing a tool other than "selection" and hitting the escape key. It should take you to "selection" instantly.

Found it! Go to system preferences and keyboard. Use shortcuts and select "app shortcuts", then add the Finale application. To set up each tool type the name exactly, then hit the key combination for the shortcut (in my case a function key). Do that for each tool you want to retrieve via shortcut. There are some tools that don't respond, but you can refer to my jpg above and see that I was able to program 16 different tools or contextual menus.

The only hitch is you have to go through the other Apple keyboard shortcuts and disable those that have the same key you want to use.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Don't forget you can switch tools using the Selection Tool. If you want to go to the Articulation Tool, just double click on any articulation in view and you're there. Double click on an expression and you're switched to that tool, etc., etc. so on and so forth.
