I'm trying to get Finale 2012 to swing 16ths for only a part of a file (about 16 bars out of 100 or so). The normal way I do this is to change my 4/4 meter to 8/8 ("choose different time sig for display" as 4/4) and then use Human Playback's "jazz" setting to swing the 16ths...but if I only need this setting for 16 bars, how do I turn it off/on?

Can I set up a swing thing as a staff style somehow?
Thanks for any help!

Did you try to start / stop the swing feel with expressions (via the playback thumbnail, Type -> Swing, enter a value) ?
If all the staves must swing, be sure to use an expression category which applies to all staves, not just one.
AFAIK, I don't think a staff style could start/stop the swing feel. But another thing you could investigate is to select a region and apply the plug-in Playback -> Human Playback (Jazz or not).

I was able to use Swing and Straight to start and stop swing sections, but AFAIK this is only guaranteed for eighths. I have not tried it with sixteenths. As Michel says, you need to use a Score List that applies Swing and Straight to all the staves, even if the designation is hidden in all but the top part.

Here's an alternative… Probably not what you want. But if you don't mind the swing values being written out instead of using expressions, JW Meter and Rhythm will do it for you, using 16th notes as a base value… And you get to select whatever range and staves you need.

Here's a quick demo. In this file, I set the Swing value to 40, which translates into 80 when swinging 8ths. In other words, 16ths needs the normal value cut in half.

Zuill -- Can you walk me through what you did? Yours plays back exactly the way I'd like, but I can't seem to duplicate it in my own file. Here's what I tried:
1) Set time signature to 8/8, display as 4/4
2) Create expression ("tempo mark" category) that says "Swing 16ths"
3) Set that expression to play back with "swing" at value 40.

But when I insert it in the score, it still doesn't swing. I've tried different values and haven't seemed to find one that sounds swingy....

We should see you file.
One thing you could do is copying the measures 3 and 5 from Zuill's file into yours. The expressions will be added to your expressions (they should appear in the Tempo Marks category) and produce the same effect.
Does that work ?

It could be that you didn't modify the Score List like I did. It must not only have the assignment to show on the needed staves in Score view, but it must assign the expression to appear in all parts specifically. otherwise, only the top staff will swing.
