I've been using finale 2007 for 2 years now and recently it hasn't allowed me to save anything. Regardless of whether I change the name of the song or not, it says "cannot rename file." I tried uninstalling and reinstalling finale, I've tried un-authorizing and re-authorizing finale, and those haven't fixed it. Any thoughts on how I can save again?

Thanks!

Stacey

It might not be a Finale problem. Check and make sure that you have enough free disk space, and also that the directory you are using hasn't gotten changed to Read Only..... and if it's an external drive, that it isn't Write Protected.

I have plenty of disk space, so that shouldn't be a problem, but how do I check to see if it's been changed to "read only"? Thanks for the help!

In Explorer (NOT Internet Explorer) select the file, right click, choose properties. Look in the bottom box. If "Read Only" is checked, uncheck it.

Hmm - nothing is marked as read only. And it's not an external drive...thanks for the help though!

We're all guessing here. But I doubt very much that it's a problem with Finale. Can you create new files in other apps? Can you rename them? Where are your temp Finale files kept? And your saved ones?

If you have the .bak file of what you're working on, see if you can open it. If you can, then save it. I had this problem once before, and that worked.

You might also be using invalid file names that use unsupported characters.

I'm assuming you've tried both "Save" and "Save As"? If the file is in a temporary directory, you won't be able to save it there.

The worst is when I realize this after I've x-ed out of the program, and I say "yes" to saving the file, and then it tells me it can't... and then it's gone. Grrrrrrr.

The "cannot rename file" message is one that is used by Windows to indicate that you have an invalid/illegal character in the file name. If it is also used in other circumstances, I'm now aware of them.

Stacey,

It would help if we could see:

a) the full pathname & filename you're trying to save;

b) the full error message you're getting.

I have a few thoughts on possibilities (some already mentioned by other posters), but without the above it would be pure spectulation.
