Just started optimizing this score and holy hell. I trust the issues will be self-explanatory. I have no idea what I might have done.

I think your groups are messed up. It's hard to tell what's going on since staves have duplicate names. But I deleted the "Bass Mrb." group, for example, and things improved.

I suspect the groups/brackets being messed up is due to "Edit-> Preferences -> Edit -> Automatic instrument family group brackets" being turned on when the document was created.  Other than doing what Motet suggested, i.e. manually removing needless groups/brackets, there is nothing else that can be done to fix it.

This option rarely has a good use and causes jumbled groups/brackets especially if you reorder staves to your own liking.  Turn it off.

I think I found the fix - see attached.

I used the following steps:

√ Select Staff Tool
√ Select all so that all staves are highlighted
√ Select "Reorder Staves" from the Staff Menu
√ Click OK without making any changes

This apparently runs some sort of "sorting" process. I might be wrong, but it looks fixed to me.

You still have some duplicate/unnecessary brackets that overlay one another.

I looked at the score in scroll view and could find no duplicates. If you're talking about the thin "wire" brackets, I think Ed wants them to indicate like instruments, such as Oboe 1 & 2, Percussion 1 & 2, Cello a & b, etc.

Yes, the overlaid duplicate brackets I was referring to go away in scroll view.  I am talking about the "curly" brackets on Harp1/2 and celeste.  The "wire" brackets on say Oboe1/2 probably are what is desired, but the thicker bracket on "[Group5]" could probably best be removed or Group5 just deleted.  What purpose does it serve?

Group 5 groups off the woodwinds, just as group 9 does the brass. The percussion and strings also have a similar group bracket, but the percussion bracket is broken. That's a simple fix.

NG, one last hitch in this: see attached, pg. 4. I've tried reordering the whole page several times, unhiding all staves and then rehiding them, and hiding them one by one. The latter works till I get to the Trumpet 1 stave, which when I try to hide it sends the whole page into confusion. Any suggestions?

Did you check the groups as suggested? As I said above, delete the apparently broken "Bass Mrb" group, which appears to be affecting page 4.

Edit: if you look at your Bass Mrb group it appears to be OK, but after "hide empty staves" it's all over the place, which is how I got onto it. If you delete and recreate it first (select the two staves and pick "Group/Add") then all is well.
