I have just started using Smartmusic, and I was wondering if anyone knew

1. Why did Makemusic use piano instead of the actual instrument for solo lines?

2. Are there plans to add more solos?

3. Are there plans to add ensembles?

4. Are there upgrades planned? If so, when?

5. Will these upgrades be part of our subscription or will they cost extra?

6. Will Makemusic be "meshing" Finale Performance Assessment with Smartmusic so Smartmusic can assess performance with an accompaniment going on.

Sorry for all the questions. I like Smartmusic so far, I am just wanting to see some more things added.

Thanks,

Tormos

1. Not positive, but probably for clarity and speed. Some MIDI instruments have slow attacks and wouldn't be ideal for fast passages. Also, most teachers probably don't want their students using the MIDI sound as something to base their own concept of tone upon. Regarding speed, if SmartMusic doesn't have to load a soundfont for the solo instrument each time, it will load the piece a little faster.

2. They will continue to add new solos and other repertoire.

3. I'm not sure, but it wouldn't surprise me if it moves into this in the future. I'm doing this on my own by making SmartMusic files in Finale for my students. The nice thing is that it uses the special soundfont for playback, so the band/orchestra arrangements can actually sound quite nice when played in SmartMusic.

4. They release updates, usually once or twice a year. I'm expecting to see one soon.

5. They are included with your subscription.

6. Yes. Finale 2005 can already save SmartMusic files for assessment, complete with accompaniment. The next release of SmartMusic should allow these to be opened.
