I have looked through the FinaleScript commands, and cannot see any relating to MIDI setup or the Intrument List window.

I use playback through a number of different MIDI devices (hard and soft) which require different MIDI setups and (less regularly) changes to the instrument list settings.

Have I missed the commands I need, or are they not available?

Hi Richard,
These are both fine suggestions. I see them as separate issues: modifying MIDI Setup and modifying the Instrument List via FinaleScript.
Currently, FS only allows playback controls of starting playback, choosing Internal Speaker Playback (mac only), pausing between songs and setting the Human Playback style.
Thanks for your post,

Actually, you can do this by using a template file.

Here's my problem and how I solve it with script -- I compose in Finale using the Softsythn, which unfortunately is limited to 16 playback voices (and WHY the heck this is so is beyond me). I want to export this to a midi file that isn't so limited, so I create a template that remaps the various string sections to higher midi numbers 17-20.

Then my Finalescript simply does a mass edit, select all, copy, open the template file, select all, paste (or you could insert if your template has fewer measures). Then I save this with a new extension.

This works great for switching between the two modes, but I am having a slight problem (hence my visit here) in pulling up only the template files (but I'll post this in a separate post). Actually, it would be even better if I could specify exactly WHICH template file I wanted, but I'm guessing this isn't possible in this first, very early, iteration of Finalescript.

So you can do the same thing quite easily, setting up your templates for your different playback needs.

Fair point as far as the instrument instrument list, but the MIDI setup is Program setting, not a file setting, and therefore unaffected by templates.

Yes, but if you setup your MIDI in the advanced mode you can choose your instrument lists then by templates.

IOW, let's say you have two distinct playback devices -- one you assign to MIDI channels 1-16, the other 17-32. Then use a template to switch one into the other.

I'm not sure what else you could do/want out of this, but if there is something specific you have in mind let me know and I'll see if there's a way to work around it.

OK,

For orchestral scores I want to use all 64 midi channels to playback through GPO Studio.

For Big Band scores (until Garritan Big Band is released) I have to use 32 channels of Soundcard playback.

For other projects, I want to use a mixture of the two.

Currently I do this by changing my MIDI setup manually for each project. But it would be nice to have (ideally) a way to save different MIDI setups and select the appropriate one for each occassion, or (and this is less ideal but the reason for my questino as mu preferred option is not available in F2k4) to have a selection of scripts to pick from to setup MIDI in the appropriate way. The third option (which also doesn't exist, and I would prefer it not to) is to have MIDI setup as a document setting.

I think this can be done, but I since I don't use GPO studio (nor have it here at work) I can't verify this. I have to look at it at home to see how it assigns the channels but I'll try and remember to do that tonight and report back here.

(And, BTW, we are both in the same boat -- I use Finale with the softsythn and then GPO for the final stuff, and am anxiously awaiting the Big Band stuff as well. Biggest difference between us is I don't use GPO for my normal composing except for the Orchestral percussion -- I export as MIDI and then remap in Sonar to GPO. Primary reason I do this is I hate spending the time to load in instruments in GPO when I'm just quickly composing, and I also like to hear articulations, etc. in Finale and use Markelford's routines to translate the MIDI file into the appropriate GPO mod wheel stuff).

Mike,

Using GPO studio, you can load up all (well 64) the instruments in the configuration you want and then save them for reloading next time. Once you have a few of these setups saved it takes only a minute or so to load whichever one you want to use. If it is taking you way longer than thi sto load instruments then you may need to investigate a registry setting which has been discussed on the GPO forum.

As regards playback of expressions, I have already created a reasonable library of expressions to control the mod wheel and velocity settings. I am currently expanding this to cover as many expressions (accents, sfz's etc., ) as I can to enable reasonable playback form finale which requires only nominal editing in my sequencer. (i have many years invested in notation as opposed to a few months in sequencing).

Richard,

I think I saw your postings on the Northern Lights board about GPO expressions -- the thing that bothered me the most was not being able to easily put crescendos/descendos in, and I don't think there's anyway around this with the editing capabilities of Finale (indeed, I seem to remember you made one post saying you had given up on Finale and was going strictly Overture for this reason).

And I know about the registry setting to speed up load times, but that requires even more memory usage than paging -- so I use the full version of Kontakt for it's DFD abilities, and using GPO Studio won't allow me to load even half the instruments I can load with this approach. Ideally I would just get more than the 1gig I have -- but adding another gig would cost me around $1K which I just can't afford right now.

I'm not convinced my workflow is the best right now, but the alternatives don't seem great either. Ideally if and when GPO Studio implements DFD then I might be able to go back and use that approach (although I'm still skeptical, because even with DFD the full version of Kontakt takes a lot of time to load up a huge orchestra. I just don't want to wait two or three minutes each time I drop into Finale to compose something).

However, even if Studio gets DFD I'm still faced with the problem of using GOS Lite -- you need to use that with a full sampler, so Kontakt would need to be loaded. Ah -- there probably shouldn't be this many complications and perhaps one day it will all be truly seamless.

But thanks for the thought -- some day when I get the time I'm going to experiment and see if I can make my life easier.

Mike,

I may be wrong, but the post I think you are referriing to was an observation that many people said that overture integrated well with GPO and that it was an option for a newbie to consider.

I have created a number of expressions for crescendos/decrescendos that move the mod wheel up or down a certain amount over a selection of numbers of beats. Used in isolation or in serial, these expressions allow me to create whatever cresc/decresc. that I need.

Although it's still work in progress, let me know if you'd like me to email you the expression library I have created so far.
