Sorry if this has already been addressed:

I am on Mac OS X 10.8.5 and I recently installed Finale 2014 (I had to Downgrade from 2014a…constant crashes.)

I still have Finale 2011 and Finale 2012 installed on the same computer.

Because Finale 2014 crashes so often, I have desired to work on New Documents in Finale 2012.

Well…with Finale 2014 installed on the same computer, Finale 2012 crashes on Boot-up, as does Finale 2011. This has never happened before, never with Finale 2012 on down.

Should that be happening?

Dan

No, absolutely that shouldn't be happening. I have 2014 on both of my computers, though I use it only rarely, and 2012 that I use occasionally, and 2011 that I use a lot, and have never experienced the problems you describe.

Maybe if you attached a crash log here someone could figure out what is causing the problem.

Please remove that extra long post, and post the crash log as an attachment, instead.

The Forum won't load the attachment. I've read the instructions, but they do't say which program an attachment can be written in. I tried Word, and it isn't accepted.

Text files, pdfs are accepted. You just need to change the extension from .log to .txt and it should be fine.

From remembering it, you've got a lot of Digidesign hardware. Has anything changed there? There were problems with 2012 and the drivers for that.

There have been many issues with some Avid Digidesign drivers and versions of Finale, including 2012.

The thread that crashes references the Digidesign driver a lot.

Any chance you updated the drivers recently? Or updated the OS without getting newer drivers?

Most people can use 2014 and 2012 with no problem, but it's conceivable that 2014 may have overwritten something that 2012 doesn't like. You could try reinstalling 2012.

Failing that, submit the crash log to MakeMusic.

Yes, I recently updated to Pro Tools 10.3.8, so the proper Drivers were loaded with that Update. Even so…Finale 2014 "works."

If I didn't Upload a Crash Log…then where do I obtain a proper Crash Log if that is not what I Uploaded?

It maybe that 2014 can cope with the new drivers from Pro Tools, but 2012 can't.

You did upload a crash log. To the User forum.

If you want MakeMusic to offer you support, then you need to submit it as part of a support request on their site.

Finale 2012 and Finale 2011 worked fine with Pro Tools 10.3.8, before I Installed Finale 2014.

I am confused: Is this Forum run by MakeMusic?

This forum is owned by MakeMusic, but it is primarily for users to talk to each other. I am not an employee of MM. I am a just a man on the internet.
MM staff do occasionally post here, but posting here is not contacting MM for support.

You can do that here:

I am having constant crash problems, running 2012 on 10.8.5 also. I do not have any other high end software running such as Pro Tools. My crashes occur almost constantly, but especially when I have two Finale 2012 documents open simultaneously. I am inconsistently able to copy and paste back and forth between documents and sometimes just changing something in one of the documents causes the whole program to crash, resulting with a monstrously long crash log. I have used Disk Utility to fix permissions with no success. I do have Finale 9, 10 11 and 12 on this computer. Could that be the problem?

Repair Permissions does NOTHING for third-party software, or user files. Its powers are extremely over-estimated.

I suggest you also submit a crash log to MakeMusic on the support pages of their website.

The fault is with Finale 2014—or—just Finale itself.

I disconnected my DIGI 002, restarted my computer, and booted Finale 2012. It loaded! Voile!!!

I then went to Finale 2012 Device Set Up—and guess what was set. Finale—all by itself did this:

Device Set Up > Audio Set Up > Source/Output > Cinema Display

I went to the Drop Down Menu at Source/Output and set it to DIGI 002.

I then re-started my Mac, Clicked on Finale 2012—and—voile!!!—it booted up!

I then went to Device Set Up and it held at:

Device Set Up > Audio Set Up > Source/Output > DIGI 002

Time after time I could quit and re-booted Finale 2012 and the DIGI 002 remained as my Output, and the program went back to working normally.

I have had Finale 2012 since late 2011, and it has worked splendidly with my DIGI 002—until a few days ago.

Now—how this happened I can't say—but I had nothing to do with the change to Device Set Up > Audio Set Up > Source/Output > Cinema Display.

If your Finale 2012 is constantly crashing try to turn off your Playback Device, if it is external, so that you can into the program and make the change I made.

Finale—for the money I pay for you, and the time I have spent correcting your mistakes—all the while trying to keep my professional career as a composer, copyist/engraver—No Thanks for all your crap.

Most sincerely,
Dan

Not quite sure how an incorrect setting in 2012 is the fault on 2014. Both programs have independent preference files.

Glad you sorted it out.

On another, related note: if I run Finale 2012, the next time I try to start up 2014, it freezes and I have to force quit it. Often I have to repeat this process several times. Then I can open it normally, i.e. with only the 'normal' error messages about the sample rate. Interestingly, I used to get these error messages four times and have to click them all away but for some reason the number of times I get this error message has recently decreased to only twice! Halleluja!
